Music and Soundtrack

@DAWGaMims I want you to know that I approve of puns.

@StephenFreer Haha thanks, dude. In the Pantry was pretty much what was playing in my head during that bear episode. It’s a very traumatic song :frowning:

@SteveAdamo Thank you very much and I appreciate all the encouragement. A lot!

@paulsoaresjr Thanks Paul. Yeah absolutely; I have hundreds of these kind of tracks lying around and I made them to kind of experiment with composing and mixing. Never occurred to me to use them for background music but I’ve already gotten a few offers from some Stonehearth Alpha vid receivers to use these for their background music. They know my stuff isn’t official but they want to use it which is fantastic

I’d love to send you the original mp3’s if you’re interested. Email me at 1moretroubadour@gmail.com. Also, if you’d like something a specific length or maybe something new, give me a few examples and details and we’ll work something out. I do love doing this

@Rudy Hahaha thanks so much man! I appreciate the feedback and the breakdown and the kind words. Okay, I owe you a little explanation since we’re dissecting.

The idea was to not just have different genre of music for the different factions but different approach to songwriting. Almost as if each faction had its own composer to really give a feel for ‘coming from different worlds’.

Those of the North

This was less melody and more tone, inspired by Jeremy Soule or Jesper Kyd style of writing from the bass up. It’s meant to feel Nordic although I’m not sure I pulled that off. But I imagine these guys are very heroic and stoic and so that’s the direction that was meant to go towards. It’s a clip of a track about 8 minutes long so it was tough picking where to clip it!

Summer Solstice

This was written ages ago when, travelling, I met a violinist roommate of a friend and we got around to writing a celtic festival song. The longer version’s on my Youtube page if you’re interested! But the idea was to move towards more classical song writing for this neutral faction.

The Emerald Wind

I totally agree that the mixing was all over the place. In fact, I wouldn’t consider any of these final builds but instead, around 40-50% done. Lots more work to clean them up and finalize. I think this track would sound better longer with more time to build up this kind of balance of zen-like pathos and this driving imperial theme. Songwriting-wise, I see these guys as the most experimental with a lot of exotic and eclectic sounds coming together. Eastern-Asian Sigur Ros?

The Tale of Cottontails

Yes!! I didn’t think anyone would get that! That’s the first thing I thought when I saw the pics. Hmmm Peter Rabbit, eh? Haha. This was the toughest track since I didn’t have a clue what to do. Very simple and whimsical and I messed up the string section but this is one I want to work on regardless of whatever happens with Stonehearth’s music. There’s a really cool tune here

In the Pantry of the Mountain King

Hahaha thank you! So much fun doing this! Inspector gadget in there somewhere? I love Hall of the Mountain King and that’s totally what I thought when I see these guys. Plus I added a little heroic bit in the middle because, let’s be honest, I’m sure they think of themselves as heroes. Just severely misguided heroes.

I really appreciate the feedback and all the emails and offers guys! I never really saw myself doing this kind of thing but now I’m really starting to think I need to explore more options. Couldn’t have done it without you guys. Thanks so much

We can all do it, SteveAdamo. We can ALL help take some from the team!

I think this is absolutely awesome. Excellent work!

We somehow need to press gang the developers into hiring Raj to write the music for Stonehearth. If there was ever going to be a game soundtrack that was totally worth buying, it is most definitely this guy’s.

There’s no way to say what I’m about to say without coming across as a bit of an arse, but here it goes.

I really like Raj’s music, I think it’s brilliant and it seems to fit the game quite well, however it’s the only music we have really heard, and there’s only a couple of people on the community so far that have made music - does that merit him being hired?

If the devs turned around and said, “Right, we’ve explored all the roads we can in regards to the music, and we feel that Raj would fit the bill perfectly and be able to provide the game with the soundtrack we want it to have” then great, I would welcome that with open arms.

I just think they should explore all their options first. Regardless of what happens I’m sure someone will put Raj’s stuff in anyway!

You might want to revisit your term of ‘being an arse’ and replace it with 'voice of reason’
It’s a very good point, and I’m glad somebody made it. I tend to get a little carried away with stuff I think is awesome. So thank you

@Rudy @SteveAdamo @Xynariz @Chlorophile @dfre19 Haha thank you very much! Good point, well made! Why haven’t I been putting these up for download?? You’ll find download links to them all here. I apologize in advance for the low quality since I have only spent a few hours on each but they’re the same ones uploaded to YouTube

@Geoffers747 Not an arse at all, I couldn’t agree with you more! This game and world and idea is their baby; they’ve quit their jobs to build it. All our suggestions and ideas are privileges, not rights.

Long story short, I used to work in engineering operations and, one near-death/eye-awakening experience later, and not too long ago I quit a very comfortable life to pursue what I love to do, which is music. It’s been very, very tough since so I completely understand how important pursuing their original vision is. It’s the spark that started the fire long before any of us got here with our chirping and noise

I love all the support for being hired and joining the team and that would be fantastic but more than anything I want to see them succeed on their terms and this project to be successful, not just financially or critically for them but personally too; so that they can say “we did exactly what we set out to do”.

Sorry for the rant. But what inspires me more, and the reason I’m here putting these up and meeting you all, is less over a great game idea and handful of clips and streams and more to help support people who chase after their dreams this recklessly. Here’s to a bright (radiant?) future for these guys!

Hello! I’d like to add my own contribution to the mix. What do you think of this song (all original) as part of the Stonehearth soundtrack? I wrote this as a demo for a different game, but I think it might fit the overall vibe of Stonehearth as well.

This one might also be fitting for Stonehearth. It’s written in a grandiose style, meant to conjure images of spectacular castles and all that fun stuff. It was written for the original soundtrack to a recent game.

Anywho, thanks for listening! Let me know what you think.

Thank you, @Raj! I really love your pieces as well. Such great warmth and color in each of them. My favorite, though, is definitely The Five Kingdoms. Great variety and feeling in each segment.

Wow I really am a fan. I love the bagpipe in First Proclamation; it definitely feels majestic, tender and calming all at once. Who are your inspirations?

Also, this brings up a good point. This thread should be all about everyone’s music, not just mine. I’m going to get Steve to update the title when I can!

How’s this for a battle theme? (Also from the soundtrack of a recent-ish title.)

It would be cool if this game had a varied soundtrack with contributions from the community. Looking forward to seeing what Tony and Tom have planned!

My main influences are Thomas Newman, Alan Silvestri, Nobuo Uematsu, Carter Burwell, Yasunori Mitsuda, Jeremy Soule, John Williams, James Horner, James Newton-Howard, and Clint Mansell. I’m sure there are more, but those are the ones off the top of my head.
