@Raj Since I didn’t get to hear the first version of it, I have no idea if it’s better. As the song stands now I would say that it is a very beautiful and moving piece that may not be right for your everyday hostile encounter. However, it would fit quite well in a more epic fight… possibly underground. I also had a thought while listening to this… more piano above ground and more strings below ground.
Starting with the horn was a great idea! This version is much better.
I can see myself playing the game… the city is all peaceful… Raj’s Bit by Bit is playing…
Then…
A Horn Blows
Me: “The battle cry!”
Overall very good. A similar horn should play when the battle is over (except a horn of “Thank God”)
@Lvl0User makes a good point. Piano above ground and strings below ground might be a good fit to keep the soundtrack with one theme. But we are experimenting here, which is great! I am looking forward to the next track.
@Raj you clearly have a flair for presentation… your cover image for the song alone screams quality… not to mention the fantastic track! i absolutely love the feeling it evokes… i think you have really nailed this one…
Wow thank you very much for all the feedback! I agree with SAMewns that this doesn’t look like it suits this game (although having started the song, I just had to finish it!). That said, do you guys think I should ‘convert’ this melody to a more Stonehearth friendly piece or start a new melody altogether??
@Ben Haha you got it! That was the idea: a horn calls and suddenly the soldiers come to life, rushing to battle. I love the idea of a horn at the end to signify the end of battle! This isn’t the entire song (just a demo) so I would love to put that in the final version! Or even as an added sound effect in the game to play when the battle music fades out. A kind of lore-friendly rpg style celebration music. Great idea!
(Also, I never thought of Bit by Bit as town music, it was more like trailer music. Maybe I should flip that one into a town theme…)
Haha Rudy thank you so much! You are the greatest wingman ever
@Lvl0User Very cool idea. I love strings too much to leave them to only underground music but I love the idea of allocating certain instrumentation to certain settings. The same melody could play a different variation if underground, or by the sea, or wherever. Very very cool idea. I love it. But you’re right this song is too intense for every day skirmishes.
SteveAdamo Haha presentation is EVERYTHING. After I finish something, I listen to it on repeat over and over while I put together an image. It helps to catch anything that needs fixing and helps to give the music a bit of texture. I’m really relieved everyone seems to like it. Do you think it fits with this game thought?
@Raj To be honest, The Sword & Nothing Else conjured a very specific image for me now that Peter Jackson has so wonderfully portrayed the Shire in the Lord of the Rings. The song makes me envision a desperate fight in the Shire with some hero rushing towards the battle with something that will turn the tide and you are left wondering, “Will this hero make it in time?” … like I said, specific.
You know, I hate to be critical, but the song doesn’t really strike me as an appropriate fighting song for this game.
I could see it working for an JRPG (or otherwise turn based strategy game), but Idk… something about it doesn’t translate well to real time combat.
I just tried listening to some other video game music’s combat (most RPGs like dragon age or The Elder Scrolls series) and I’m not sure I can articulate what it is that separates your song from those songs, but idk… It’s not my preference for some reason.
Perhaps you can think about it and come up with a reason why and tell me I’m crazy or that you see some sort of point in the composition of the song.
I really like the melody and style of this piece (pacing and so forth).
Try to make it more Stonehearth friendly. But if it proves too difficult just restart!
@DAWGaMims I understand where youre coming from. But listening to other real time strategy-city building games I hear alot of different styles. Perhaps the more Stonehearthy version will address that concern.
Hey ho! I’m alive! 50 new messages hey! These forums really took off! Super excited about this game! Would be more excited if a certain someone’s music was in it. Jus sayin…
Whoops! Should probably mention, updated my original post!
Hi Raj! Have you seen the new stretch goals! Added soundtrack! Have they approached you with anything? Because I would love to hear a soundtrack with your songs on it!
@DAWGaMims Couldn’t agree with you more Still trying to figure out a way to balance intense with cute, something frantic with something more strategic. I’ll get there…
@Rudy@jimmywolf Thank you very much! Yes I did see the added soundtrack and I’m glad the guys are thinking of music since they haven’t seemed to mention it very much, if at all. I’m going to leave them to figure out what they like since this project is their baby and possibly, life’s work. But like I said, I would love to be a part of it!
@Rudy Because that’s going to be the name of my town. Long story…
Whoooo I can’t wait to hear back from this one! Just to start us off, I looooove the ‘Those of the North’ and ‘In the Pantry of the Mountain King’. Best. Ending. Ever.
once again @Raj loving the work, and this 5 tracks in one is insane! i found the first track to be my favorite, but i enjoyed every single new piece… really, really appreciate all your efforts!
@Raj, these are excellent! Ever consider allowing others to use in video productions for mention and link in the credits? I use a lot of Kevin Macleod’s music for background tracks to my Minecraft videos. I could always use more adventure/fantasy/whimsical music.
Those of the North - 5/5 - it sounds so bold and heroic but lonely and magical at the same time!! I love this track but so short?? Haha I want more! It feels like journeying heroically through snow. Perfect!
Summer Solstice - 5/5 - I love the feel of this! It feels like an irish festival! I like how the flute comes in on the second part and copies the violin (or vice versa?). This one is bursting to life and I can’t wait to hear the full version.
The Emerald Wind - 4/5 - exotic and mystical and I like the name too (no idea what it means though haha). The drums and rhythm sound very industrial and at the latest live feed they said that Raya’s Children would be the ‘empire’ of the game so it suits them well. My only gripe is that it can get hard to hear everything properly in the middle but I love the melody!
Ok quick break to say how awesomely you’ve distinguished each faction and made them feel like their own world but still kept everything cohesive! You HAVE to be on the soundtrack when the beta comes around!
Okay! Onwards:
The Tale of Cottontails - 4/5 -
Cute name (it’s a Peter Rabbit reference, no?). It sounds nice and bouncy and busy and peaceful all at once, especially when the piano comes in. And damn if it isn’t whistle-catchy! (Real word?). Only reason I give it 4 is because the violin sounds a little off when it comes in it is it just me…?
In the Pantry of the Mountain King - 7/5!! - you get two bonus points: one for the awesome name (haha, I guess in the Hall of the mountain king was taken? ) and another for having In the Hall of the Mountain King in there!! There’s even a lord of the rings style part with the horns and orchestra! I love it! Makes me want to play a goblin faction! In fact, I’m going to make a topic on just that and see what I can muster for support!!
Raj you’ve really outdone yourself! You need to be more famous mate!
