In terms of your trouble with the cloak and hood, while I am not the most familiar with how shadows will affect the contours of models in-game, you can basically do this: overall, it mustn’t be too superfluous as they would be fighting in this, and too much gets in the way when fighting and gets caught in the various flora of the forest.
For the hood, simply cover the head with the hood, and for underneath create a flat surface down to about the chin, though leaving many of the frontal face features. For most of this flat surface, make it various colors of black/dark grey, while simply darkening the facial features to a mottled brown or darker tan.
With the rest of the cloak, have it go down to about the mid-calf, and yet again do not try to do too much. And while this might be a b**** of a thing to animate along with the movements of the character, for instance if this was a ranger character you mentioned above getting this cloak. But it would be very interesting.

Is that supposed to be an insult to the dwarves? Because it isn’t. He is just taking a hot bath. A really hot bath. True dwarven men use lava to bathe.
