ya, I would like to try it out.
Minecraft sadly got quite boring for me too, mods and friends made it fairly fun but I canāt play FTB or Tekkit etc. multiplayer because I have a normal computer. Sadly, I just fall through the world, forever. 
Not a big fan for the currency mods, just makes things more irritating
Why would a normal computer matter? Mineās a standard macbook and it never had issues, heck my brothers 4 year old one ran servers for it just fine. Unless your graphics card is a decade old you should be fine, thatās the main issue with it.
I donāt know, but literally half of the time when I played I would just fall through the world. Itās a 2 year old Acer Aspire but itās only got about 2gb left of usable memory, is that a problem? I assigned 1gb to FTB, but not the entire 2gb because I did want iTunes on and originally I used Skype at the same time too.
My graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. I donāt think itās very old.
I donāt know what the problem was. I even used an Ethernet cable, as my routerās a bit dodgy.
I would say your RAM will be the major problem. You can download some more here
FTB is quite intensive in that respect and the more you can allocate to it the better.

I thought my RAM was likely the problem. It pales compared to that of any of my friends. Itās not worth investing time into fixing anyway because I was playing on a friendās account because he didnāt like computer MC at that point, but now he does so I donāt have an account.
I still know most FTB recipes off by heart though. Curse this knowledge and its taunting waysā¦
what OS are you running, and which version of Java?
i know when i updated to 64bit java (im on Win7), it made a significant difference in the performance for meā¦ most noticeable when exiting the game, and not having all of the memory take ages to be reallocatedā¦
Also Win7, and Iām pretty confident itās also 64bit javaā¦

If somebody had a server going, or if the oneās above have all been going Iād hop on with you all at some point (not sure if thatās a reason to play, or a reason to avoid the game
