Game Crashes on Launch in protocol.h

Hi Folks,

I hope I placed this post in the right section of the board, sorry in advance if I’m wrong.

I’m also having trouble to launch the game. That’s particularly odd because it worked fine for the first few days. It sometimes crashed and I wasn’t able to load the savegames once it crashed (if I ended the game regularly - no problem). The error message in all cases (crash during game, crash loading savegame, crash no start) is the same, so this might be helpful.

Error Message is:
Assertion Failed: c > 0 && c <
ReadBufferSize(C:\rb\ihome\root\SH-OB0-BUILD\stonehearth\source\include\protocol.h:138)

One thing I wonder is the "C:\rb…"
C:\ is only my windows on ssd, all apps, games, programs including steam and therefore stonehearth are located on D:
so logically the path C:\rb doesn’t even exist (except it’s some weird stuff that I can’t see through the explorer even with ‘enable see hidden objects mode’)

I tried pretty much everything from the workaroud area, updating drivers, 32 bit vs 64 bit etc. so that’s why I’m wiriting this post, maybe it helps you guys to improve the game (which is a great pleasure to play by the way).

Thanks for your crash report, I have moved it into its own thread that way we can troubleshoot your issue on its own. The line you extracted from the log is something I have not seen before (sorry) so I am going to have to call in the experts (aka the developers)!

There’s a related issue, which was solved by enabling Stonehearth through the firewall, but it might not work in this case:

I have some news regarding the bug.
Alpha 13 seems to have brought some improvements I can now start the game and make all the decisons (culture, landscape etc) and choose a starting location on the map. But right at the very beginning as the world gets generated I get the same error and the game crashes. I tried different procedures (starting as admin, start with compatibility mode) but again the problem appears to be beyond my technical capabilities.

Glad to know you got the game to boot, but this does seem to be the same error unfortunately. In your log, about 2/3 of the way down you can see the same protocol.h line. Let me re-page @albert to give an update next week.

Hello there, I’m a huge fan of the game, and today was tehy day where I just couldn’t wait any longer. Even though I use Linux (and I’m completely aware that issues may come from that), I thought I’d chime in to say that I also get the error:

@Stateless1903 seems not to have Linux and still have the problem. @meikomeik from another thread has the same issue on Fedora Linux.

I run Stonehearth through Steam, which I installed via PlayOnLinux. This setup defaults to the 32bit client (because Steam on Linux, AFAIK, needs 32bit) which may help troubleshoot.
My machine is an up-to-date Linux Mint 17 with Wine version 1.7.53-steam_crossoverhack used in PlayOnLinux.

Update: I just tried once more, and this time was greeted with a different assertion failure:

Stonehearth Assertion failed: obj(C:\rb\ihome\root\SH-OB-BUILD\stonehearth\source\dm\receiver.cpp:41)

Again, you seem to reference some file that only exists on your machine. Maybe this helps.

I also receive this error when loading a game that has been played for 5-10+ in-game days.

I am also running Stonehearth through Wine on Linux. I understand that Linux is not supported yet, but I wanted to share a few insights I found into the cause of the error.
While I haven’t been able to resolve or find a workaround, sharing might help the devs fix it sooner.

The line before the error in stonehearth.log reads:

network | client breaking processing early (error parsing message)

That combined with “protocol.h” implies to me a internet communications related problem. Since it occurs during singleplayer, this must be related to Steam integration.

I’m not familiar with this stuff, but libcef (cef.dll) and steamwebhelper are involved, as they appear in the debug backtrace in Wine.

Unsuccessful attempts at working around I did:

  • Running Stonehearth.exe outside of Steam after having installed via Steam
    • Game runs and still has the error exactly as though it were run through Steam
  • Running Steam via “Steam.exe -no-cef-sandbox”
    • I read on Wine appdb that this might help with steamwebhelper problems, but it didn’t help me
  • Turning off my networking (internet), easy to try, but didn’t work.
  • Playing a game where I did no custom building construction or template building placement.

Details on my environment:

  • Xubuntu 16.04
  • Wine 1.9.11-staging via PlayOnLinux, in 32-bit prefix (I could not get 64-bit Stonehearth to run at all in Wine)
  • Steam installed via PlayOnLinux “Install components” section
  • Stonehearth Latest via Steam (0.17.0 develop 3023 x32 build)
  • also tried the Stable version (0.16.0 release 559 x32 build) with same results

Hope this helps the devs resolve the issue.
Having to start over due to being unable to load games is getting tiresome.

Hi, just wanted to update that I’m still having this issue in Alpha 17 (release 584)

Also, I don’t think it’s Steam integration’s fault anymore, since running the game standalone also has the issue. I think it has to do with the client/server code that is used in singleplayer since singleplayer is essentially a localhost server game, I think.

Hello guys! I really need some help here… I have the same error Stateless1903 had:

Assertion Failed: !e(C:\rb\ihome\root\SH-OB0-BUILD\stonehearth\source\protocols\protocol.cpp:138)

I just bought the game and I really enjoy it and would love to play more, so I can finally start to understand a bit more and make some progress, but it crashes after a few minutes of playing and I get this error… I would really appreciate some help.

Can you provide some more details for us to help you troubleshoot?

  1. What are your system specs? CPU, GPU, and RAM. Windows version? External monitor or laptop screen?
  2. What version of the game are you running?
  3. Do you have any mods installed?
  4. Upload your stonehearth.log and crash.dmp which are both located in the game install directory. Default Steam location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stonehearth

Well, I gotta be honest, I am not such a computer pro. :wink: But I have an external monitor, Vista 32 Bit Service Pack 2(cruel world), 4,00 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Quad and an ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series… so basically a 9 years old computer. Doing his job, but… yes, you know what I mean. :wink:

Oh I forgot 1 thing: I should also tell you what I already tried.

  1. Started steam as an admin
  2. Started the game .exe as an admin
  3. Changed the graphics
  4. Changed my setting to “Force 32 Bit”
  5. Checked the game files with steam
  6. Deactivated all anti-virus programs

Thanks for the log and dump.

One thing I’ve found in the dump is that AVG is running some type of hook in the game. This is usually some type of browser add-on that comes with your Antivirus, as Stonehearth’s UI uses Chromium Embedded and antiviruses try to attach to it. I would recommend disabling AVG completely and trying again.

Beyond that, I’m not really seeing anything that would allow me to point you in the right direction. I am noticing this line repeated many times in your log, and it isn’t one I’ve seen before:

raw shader compile error: Vertex shader(s) linked, fragment shader(s) linked.

As it seems graphics related, perhaps @not_owen_wilson can shed some light on it (no pun intended).

That’s strange… As I said, I deactivated it completely. It gives the option to deactivate it for several minutes OR until the next restart, which I chose. So it shouldn’t do anything… The only thing I could try now is uninstalling it…

I am famous for strange problems the people have never seen before. :smiley: So if anyone could help here I would be really happy… the game looks amazing so far.

Edit: Just a little update… it’s working now! Just uninstalled AVG and restartet the computer to try if that’s the actual problem… gonna have to find an alternative now but i can play the game! Thanks. :slight_smile:

I am encountering this same issue as Arcadien. Saved games crash when loaded except saved games that have just been started, those seem to work okay. I can copy the saved games to a Windows machine and they work fine so the saves themselves do not seem to be corrupted.

My OS is Fedora 23. My Stonehearth version is Alpha 18 and I am running the 64 bit version. Stonehearth is being run through Wine, specifically wine-1.9.12 (Staging) with a clean 64 bit prefix for Stonehearth.

It looks like this issue is also occurring for Debian Sid based on the Wine AppDB page.

I have disabled SELinux and my firewall to prevent issues similar to the AVG issue that was the cause for the OP with no improvement.

One other unusual thing about my setup - the installer doesn’t work (clicking the button on the first screen has no effect) so I used the direct game archive download. This stores the save files in a subfolder of the unpacked stonehearth directory which I dropped in Program Files (x86) rather then an AppData folder. Not sure if that could be a factor.
