Easter holidays are a good time for revision, but there’s only so much one can do. And with all this free time, I’ve been keeping up with the compositions. So, much to my own surprise, I have a new track.
It isn’t very long, though I may revisit it later, and it’s a bit rough round the edges, however having jumped the initial hurdle of being scared to put up any music particularly if it wasn’t as polished as I could make it, I’m much less bothered now about doing so and thus there are one or two dodgy bits, particularly on the flute trills where they lasted slightly longer than I wanted and jarred the piece. I have no idea how to fix those other than how I did it, which is by no means a particularly good solution.
Anyway, enjoy! This piece is the labour of probably 3-4 hours work at the utmost, so all criticisms are welcome.
p.s. just thought it was somewhat relevant (being my personal thread for my musical shenanigans), I got 95/100 which is an easy distinction on my Grade 3 music theory! my Grade 3 piano exam is tomorrow morning, I just hope I can get that merit…
Apologies, temporary maintenance, realised I’d missed a tie at the end and it threw it off somewhat. Soundcloud doesn’t allow you to change the track unless you’re a member so I’ve had to bin it and reupload. It then decided that the newly replaced file was no longer permissible for Soundcloud to access, even though the virtually identical file in the exact same file had had permissions, plus I should be admin anyway and rant rant stupid Windows 8 administrator permissions rant.
Should be good to go now!
Edit: Well ‘should be’ is definitely the phrase to use…hmmm…
The link I’m trying to post is literally fine, something’s gone out of wonk. My guess is it’s trying to access the old page which had the same link which I deleted before creating this new one. I’ll (reluctantly) change the URL of the piece and see if that helps.
Edit: Oh good, it fixed it. Having to control my OCD on having changed the link to have a 2 on the end of it, but if it’s working I’ll bear the pains.
Well done sir. I really love the title of it, what made you name it Finder Her Feet?
I love the simplicity in both of the pieces of music that I’ve listen to of yours. Piano and flute sound beautiful together. Good job on being brave enough to post your work on the web for all of us to hear. I already notice your music abilities LEVELING UP from when we first heard Backseat, till now.
Well if I’m honest I’m still not truly satisfied with the name, though this does at least portray the feel I wanted this time; since I first played the piano line I envisioned little ducklings swimming around with their mother. I wanted the piece and the name to accompany the tale of the growth of new life, and since I sadly couldn’t think of anything to do with ducklings to match this (‘Pond Life’ really sucked), I decided to go for something to describe an animal taking its first steps. With this I envision a deer, though that probably comes from childhood memories of Bambi.
Thank you for your kind words. More to come at some point, though I have no idea of time-frame.
Smokestacks, I’m always excited to hear new stuff from you and see you progressing! I love how dedicated you are
I have two suggestions for you. One I’ll private message you and the other is this: don’t change the name. I love it. I didn’t get the duck, pond and guidance feeling.
What I did get is a sense of reverence. Stained glass windows with long dusty beams if light over soft wooden panels. A church and a sense of peace. And the title kind of guided that idea; the idea of someone stepping into a quiet little, empty church, stepping to a tall standing statue of an angel or a mother, and putting their hands on her feet. Whatever they say inside their head, whether it’s a prayer or gratitude or nothing at all, they keep it inside.
It’s brilliant. There’s work to be done but that’s always the case with music. The title and the atmosphere capture something serene and revenent and poignant.
Don’t change the title, pursue it’s potential
Also: Post more often! go to my YouTube page and look at my earliest stuff. Embarrassingly bad. But it pushes you to get better. Keep getting better!
I would! And I will! It’s just I’m in a great place to get some pretty awesome results on my GCSEs and I’m not going to let the opportunity slip away. Come the 3rd May I will have just two maths tests to sit and then I’m done, and I really really don’t need to do much for maths. So from the 3rd June I’ll be hopefully more frequent, and then minus a summer job I’m gonna have a ton of free time on my hands for all this, so I might even set a target for an upload every 5 days or something. Who knows. Point is, come end of exams, I’m gonna be a lot more active, but it’s gonna be another 2 months.
As for the name, it’s staying. I suppose it works for both images, and I can see yours. It’s a joy to put music out when you’re met with such encouraging words. Thanks Raj!
Wow, great job! I really can’t praise you better than Raj, but this is excellent. I’m certainly going to use it for studying, homework, and Sudoku… It’d be the type of music I use for concentration.
All other priorities and school, sure, but never be afraid to put something up because you’re scared it isn’t good enough! Putting up rusty work just encourages other people who think “hey wait a sec… Smokestacks is one of the most amazing composers in the world but his early stuff sounded like THIS?! That’s not different than what I can do… Maybe if I keep at it, I can be as good as him one day!”
Hehe, well as much as I would love your little anecdote to come true, and hopefully one day it will, I shall take the message to mind. And more stuff will come. Just started on a dance, though regret the choice of a piccolo (my ears ) for lack of any sort of pipe. I really should sleep though, my piano exams at 1 tomorrow…
I feel you…the kakuro app on my phone with almost all 1000 levels completed…
Admittedly at least 400 of those were ridiculously easy, it being 200 levels each in Beginner, Amateur, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert. Beginner and Amateur commonly took under 3 minutes, and I took pride in completing some of the Experts in under 10 minutes.
and now that i have, let me congratulate you… your work is improving with each new track (thats the point though, isnt it! )… well done my friend… very soothing track that i would absolutely have playing as ambient music while i read (i think someone else mentioned that as well?)…
@Raj is just chock full of good advice too… cant wait to hear more of your work @Smokestacks!
