I have never yet seen a vein of anything 
as in a ore vein? were do you usually start out at? if your not in the mountains then you wont see them, except for some very rare exceptions.
I always start in the mountains (well, right against them, so I can build on grass but tunnel directly into mountain rock). I usually always get a reasonable amount of ore, but I have never ever seen an ore vein of any kind, let alone a gold or iron one (which would be the most useful).
Well, not that gold is especially useful right now, but I assume that with the caravans in Alpha 9 we’ll also have a new recipe to use gold and silver bars to craft coins (or just be able to sell the bars).
well if you send your hearthlings around the mountains to scout sooner or later you should come across an exposed vein. if you try tunneling into the mountain to find them its rather rare, at least in my experiences
