I have sent a post to The Team! asking about the leagality issues that (very undoubtedly) could arise ! and I’m waiting for a response

I’m not sure if the team’ll know too much about, copyright laws not being an area of expertise that I know of. You’d do better off emailing WB, but good luck with that.

actually i tried using their costumer service and i seems almost “down”, i know costumer services are usually not good but this kinda pissed me off so i will try again tomorrow with better temper and a clear head  (**in fact i can’t submit any thing through the customer service hence defeating the purpose of it all together **)

The main problem with legality is probably fine due to fair use or something similar in America however that’s not always the case as for example in Australia it would be illegal to use. The key thing is just how safe do you want to play it. The things is though that you can get very close without breaking anything with one catch, the names are the big issue. Hobbits are copyrighted, however calling them Halflings negates that as a near identical species that is public domain. Having Sauron or Smaug would be bad but a dark wizard that works by corrupting people with cursed artifacts of power or a giant gold dragon with a gem encrusted body are fine. Just remember that there is laws that state that they have to do something if they find out about it if they ever want to be able to do something, most things can be eclipsed by changing the names and tweaking a detail or two. Fantasy is broad, cursed rings of invisibility are positively mundane in comparison to a lot of things, Tolkien developed a setting and it’s an interesting one for it’s purpose, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for a game or stonehearth.

Of course there is plenty of public domain mythologies out there for use, a lot of them are much richer, better known, and more detailed than Tolkien anyway.

agreed for lack of wanting a law suit or any legal action to be taken, why not look at some of the DND settings im pretty sure everything that is in LOTR is somewhere in a DND book and can be adapted to a similar setting.

You know DnD is highly copyrighted as well right? The notable public domain stuff is actual mythology, endless tales of heroes, magic, and gods. You just have to look, Greek, Roman, Celtic, Egyptian, Nordic, Shinto, Aztec, and there’s plenty more. There is a wealth of resources out that have nothing resembling copyright, it’s generally pretty easy to tell. Of course original magic systems and races generally aren’t too hard either with a little bit of effort.

Don’t limit yourself, just imagine.

Actually im working on something similar to that (well just no storylines or so, only the creatures etc) But i dont think if you make a lotresque mod and dont ask for donations or any of that support us stuff WB shouldnt really complain i think well maybe tell us to stop at most if they can prove we have stolen work from them … wich we wont really

Bombur is still better. :stuck_out_tongue:

While we figure things out we could still showcase models, and use them but change names it’s even funnier. And No one says i can stop you from changing the names back yourself

@SteveAdamo @Xavion

is there anything wrong with that ?

hobbit could be halflings
gandalf could be a wandering wizard (look-a-like)

In fact this could be way better, puting your touch on the Tolkien world

Yush just like china does it  btw if anyone is intrested in a hour or two i will livestream while making that balrog (should we name it differently aswell or will they just say … its a race not a name)

this is a great way to approach it… gives you an inspirational “spring board” of sorts…

I shall rename the thread, Work of J.R.R Tolkien ? or what do you think I should name it ?
Tempo name added it might stick

And also i would watch a great part of that live stream

Well i dont “work of J.R.R Tolkien” will be good but the Title it has now is good enough, untill you make a storyline and quests i dont think you really need anything else than that (because you can do something like Our take on Tolkien: The tales of drunken dwarves. or whatnot) a and my twitch name is Drago_Ken if you cant find it (i usually name my streams with the things im making)

Good luck with balrog he gonna be a handful, Since he is so large hes gonna be hard too fit with stonehearth where less is more

He could be the size of Cthulu in the trailer

yes but its a hard subject to voxalize…

**But many “cheats” can be made in a 3d software **

While rigging the model, Improving of there is need to

I would like to see the default house model replaced with a small Hobbit House. Which also requires dirt to construct the dirt mound of course… I could help with any of these things when I get the time. Music, models, animations, criticism, I got it covered. Just give me some time…

EDIT: Made it look nicer. Have to state this because “Body looks too similar” apparently…
