Here goes my lengthy diatribe…
I’m 42, a Dad as well, and work full-time as a web application developer / manage I.T. infrastructure for a small biz in Atlanta. I’ve been a coder now for almost 13 years – amazingly on some of the same technologies still (Coldfusion, SQL, Javascript). Some of my dev experiences I blog about over at coldfusionservers.com.
My day is filled with application development, managing web servers & databases, general I.T. support to staff, and keeping everything running.
I’ve been gaming since my C64/Atari 2600 days and have always enjoyed the medium best as a PC gamer. I own two desktop machines that I built myself via parts sourced online. And I work off a laptop, all win7 machines. I still play with linux now and then and have grown to like linux mint OS. My desk at work is filled with monitors – the more the merrier ;).
I have always been attracted to games like Stonehearth. Love the building/strat aspect. I also admire what these guys are doing from a development perspective. Having thought out and produced a game engine themselves and then quit their jobs in the software industry, and successfully crowdsourced their game. I do envy them a bit, and sometimes wish I could do the same. But the reality is it takes special dev skills to do what they’re doing, time, and money. I have a family, and existing I.T. profession/skills that just wouldn’t allow me to survive in the gaming industry. So I’m a follower, and enjoy watching what these guys produce, and ultimately playing the end result. Who knows maybe one day I’ll jump in on the modding side of this game.
I’m always keeping an eye out on kickstarter, as I have donated towards a few other projects. Some of my favorite genres include action rpg, and space sim (excited about star citizen).
At one time I thought I might get into the music side of the gaming industry. At one point during my career I got burned out on coding and went to be a stay-at-home Dad for a bit. During that time I managed to record an album. And this was before the days of Ableton Live, FL Studio and other production software that is out now. But I managed to get a album up on iTunes. If you like new agey/electronic classical, adventure music – check out my site http://stevenkeys.com. And go easy on me, I’ve always been shy about sharing my music!
If you’re on Steam, look me up there under the moniker: Karnaj
Looking forward to Stonehearth, and nice meeting all of you.
-Steve
