In games like these, I find myself to be a realist - thus, I make my towns look like actual medieval towns or villages. You will rarely find my villages with things that wouldn’t be there if it were real life. I find it the most fun and visually appealing.
So, one thing that I always have trouble with is deciding what to do with the flag and fire pit. I usually put them in the middle, but I do know that generally, a village in medieval times would have either a church, lord’s house, or town hall at the center.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone with any idea of ‘real’ locations the town banner and the fire pit would go? If nothing else, if there are like-minded individuals out there, feel free to share your own town center/setups.
I do somewhat of the same. At night, Hearthlings will gather around the firepit if they aren’t working. So I create a little commons area in the center of my map / town, with the firepit in the middle. Think of something like a park in a city.
I don’t know how realistic you’re trying to make it, but making a trader’s guild, and having the flag inside there would make it look and feel as it’s intended with the game.
If you wanted to, you could create drop areas perfectly around the 1 square that the flag occupies so that everything you get from the shops ends up straight into your usable inventory.
The fire pit could go in the middle of a great hall or tavern dinning room. The banner you can place in the wall of a throne room, Townhall’s main hall or in the balcony of the townhall. You could also make a monument out of it in the middle of the main square.
If I’m not mistaken, the Flag and fire pit have important roles, Flag tells game where to drop merchant traded items and the fire pit is the homing beacon for the Hearthlings when far out, the harder time a Hearthling has in finding their way back to the pit the more often the game stalls or folks idle when obstructed path to pit are in play.
I think hiding the two or trying to disguise them will cause problems for the game since they are essential mechanisms, no?
Thanks for the ideas guys, I really like the trader’s guild one. I was thinking about placing the fire pit on the top floor of a guard tower or something, although it probably wouldn’t be the best since citizens move for it often.
Does anyone know how much light the brazier/tower brazier puts out? Is it a lot or only a little bit?
There’s also another use for flag: an area around it is considered ‘taken’ by hearthlings, which means that only outside this area monsters can spawn. Which is why when you build wide towns there are skeletons and such in your homes or mineshafts. Don’t know about the exact diameter, but it could be googled, I think.
If you look at the picture I posted before, the four fires at the feet of the “monument” are normal braziers. That may give you an idea of how much light they have.
The reason I was wondering, was because I thought putting a big fire or something on the tallest building in my town (which usually turns out to be the guard tower) would be kinda neat, and so far the thing that gives off the most light is the fire pit.
