Hello everybody. I got this game (Alpha 13 version, I believe) on Steam at Christmas time and have been playing it ever since. I have a few questions because I’m having a little bit of difficulty navigating through the site. I don’t know if the issues have been taken care of or not since topics I’ve seen have been mentioned months ago and I haven’t seen any recent topics about them.
Has there been a fix to the “late game” issue where workers suddenly stop working and tend to just idle?
Is there a way to get the workers to pick up resources that are lying around for a long period of time even though there’s room in stockpiles and have those resources actually recorded and used?
I’ve never modded before and would be interested in learning more about mods people have done for the game. Where would be a good place to begin?
What are some other issues that are still being working on so I know what to keep my eye out for and avoid as best as I can?
I’ll probably have more questions in the future, but these are the ones I can think of at the time.
Not yet, although some players have more luck than others. A good way to counteract this is to keep your villager count low, and not give them too many orders at once.
As I said before, don’t give your workers too many tasks at once. The Loot option under the Town Defense bar will sometimes have them pick up resources. Hitting into R and going into Alert will sometimes reset the AI of your villagers.
@Froggy and @RepeatPan would be great people to talk to, as they are responsible for the excellent mods Candledark and Frostfeast.
I really have no idea what to tell you, as there are always new things popping up. Your best bet is to just research anything you find that seems abnormal, and if it hasn’t been asked about, create a topic. Asides from the Idle Villagers bug, I can’t really think of anything major. But don’t try to build structures that are too complex - the AI and pathfinder aren’t advanced enough to deal with grand castles. If anything, build them in parts and be prepared to use the console (accessed by ctrl+c) and use the destroy command to get rid of scaffolding and ladders that haven’t been taken down. However, this can sometimes cause errors to pop up; what I’ve seen, though, they aren’t game-breaking.
Hey there @fou121, welcome to the Discourse! Let me do my best to answer your questions:
Not yet. At the moment, you will likely get to a point where the game starts to idle when it is not expected to. When this occurs depends heavily on your computer specs and what you are doing in the game. That being said, performance improvements are always happening, so when you encounter this “late game” should continue to be later and later, ideally not happening at all by the time the game become “stable”.
Couple of options. You could try using the loot command in the combat menu to trigger their pickup. This sometimes works. More likely to work is creating a stockpile (or moving a storage container) closer to the objects in question. I see this happen most often when the objects are far away from everything else. Finally, stocking is one of the lowest priority tasks for workers, so you could try disabling building and mining for your workers in the citizen menu and see if that helps.
One issue that I’m aware of is don’t put food in crates. My shepherd couldn’t feed his animals when I had food in the crates. I did a search and even though it was back in Oct the post was saying don’t use the crates for food. I ran into that issue when I had animal food stored in the crates.
And recently discovered don’t move the goblin campfires but destroy them instead. If you move them but they disappear before being placed it can cause a lot of goblin attacks in the same night.
Some tips on maximizing performance: turn your shadows, max lights, and graphics all the way down. Keep villager numbers under 16 for best performance. Get rid of followers with low body stat, as the body stat makes them move quicker. Put stockpiles/containers near items that have been on the ground for a long time, and send villagers to do a random task nearby, and they’ll likely get around to picking 'em up. Turn game off and then back on when you notice that stuff isn’t getting picked up/tasks aren’t being completed. Don’t have villagers doing too much at once to maximize performance.
