I just bought Stonehearth but it won't start (anti-virus issue)

Summary:

I enter steam, press play on Stonehearth, it loads saying ‘Preparing to launch stonehearth’ then it says syncing for like a nano sec and then it does nothing.
Basically, it won’t start

Stonehearth.log:

Not sure what you meant.

Welcome to the forum! :slightly_smiling_face:

Do you have a crash.dmp file in the same folder than the log?
You should be able to upload files now.

Did you try running the Stonehearth.exe as administrator?
And allowing an exception for it in your antivirus?

Im on common>Stonehearth
There is no file called crash.dmp
I have one called crash_reporter

Okay so running Stonehearth as an admin, I can’t, the run as admin words don’t pop up for some reason.
I’ll try checking out my antivirus software

Nevermind on admin running
I just ran it

So it is working for you now?
I wonder if it had some sort of permissions issue

No it still isn’t
I was just able to run Stonehearth.exe as admin

There should be a checkbox in the Compatibility tab of the Properties menu (right-click on the Stonehearth.exe) to set it to run as Admin so that you don’t have to do it manually every time (but I’m not sure if it’ll help).

Also not sure of the cause of this issue, I’ve sometimes seen reports of issues here that have also been reported for other Steam games elsewhere (like blackscreens and crashes).

If it was a permissions issue, the game needs write permission for the folder it is installed in (to save building templates, logs, etc) so that’s why I suggested the administrator workaround.

How did it go with setting an exception in your antivirus / firewall? Sometimes they block the game (or make it lag when you just launch it), especially when we release a new patch, because the .exe is relatively new in the Antivirus database so it thinks it might be a malicious file. :slightly_frowning_face:

My only virus defenders are ‘Windows Defender security Center’ and ‘Mcafee’, they both didn’t label it as a mal-file. Do you think the game just might not be able to run on my pc?

It could be?
Here are the minimum/recommended specs: Some Technical Stuff – Stonehearth
Not sure how good is your laptop, it probably has integrated graphics

Although having Windows 10 it must be recent, so it might be able to.

Okay, I’m not sure whats going on.
Could I be missing a file?

It could be anything, certainly.
If you want to try a clean reinstall, follow these steps:

  1. Launch Steam.
  2. Right-click Stonehearth and click Properties
  3. Click on the Local Files tab
  4. Click Browse Local Files...
  5. Go up one directory level to the common folder.
  6. Delete the Stonehearth folder.
  7. Close Windows Explorer and return to Steam.
  8. Right-click Stonehearth and click Uninstall...
  9. Once removed, right-click Stonehearth again and click Install Game...
  10. Close Windows Explorer.
  11. Launch Stonehearth
