From the color of the hat(looks red instead of purple to me) in the recipe you aren’t playing the latest version of the game, do you.
In the previous versions was a not fixed error in the higher tier gong recipes where the generals gong required a master’s hat and the master’s gong needed an elite’s hat. This bug is spotted and fixed in the newest version(a17v3008).

As @SePax says, you’ve run into a bug from A16 that has been fixed in A17.
About the combat bugs you mention, you can report them under the Support->Bug Reports category on the forum.
