Hearthlings just keep picking up stuff in the stock pile then they place it back down

When my guys aren’t doing anything the just go to the stock pile and pick up items and place them down again and they repeat this and it gets in the way of them working. My blacksmith won’t even make a trappers knife because he does it too…They all just gather in one spot to do it and there can be like 15 guys at one time doing it.

If you don’t have enough storage space then they will do that, so make sure they have some place to store the goods.

Happens to me sometimes as well, even when there is a lot of space open.

All my workers are stuck restocking stockpiles. Only the farmers seem to still be doing anything productive. I even tried restarting the game.

Anytime this happens in my game I remove an item from that stockpile’s config, like say Wood, the hearthlings will move the now unsorted stuff elsewhere (another stockpile) and make room in the one they were stuck on, clears the stuck workers for the time being, though it would be nice they could figure it out themselves

This problem’s been chalked down to a glitch in the pathfinding ai, I saw it after some item looting but then it reappeared on the peaceful town I built because I was tired of my villagers doing nothing. It’s apparently on the to-do list though so hopefully that fix batch will drop soon.

Anyone find a way to resolve this? I started a new game and now it has happened again. Just tried destroying a stockpile, after adding several more, but got the following engine error:

release-453 (x64)

I posted this same post in the thread about when the hearthlings just stop doing what they are supposed to do, as I think the two threads may be related:
"I am experiencing the same issue. It seemed to get progressively worse as I gained more and more villagers…
I think the first line (below) is a strong clue “…bad unit transition “start_thinking” from “finished” in action fill the backpack with ground items” i.e. After they pick an item off the ground, they have trouble, or are unable, to determine what to do next (unknown transition).

I just posted in Idle Hearthlings and newcomers another related issue that may have a simple fix and may help to determine the cause of the idle worker bugs.
(in this particular case, it was that my hearthlings were hungry but the door to the dining hall was blocked by scaffolding, so they just stood around hungry, and did not proceed to eat, nor do the next thing on their work list.
…new users cant post images…

After further observation, I am not sure if the door was indeed blocked by the scaffolding, as I have seen hearthlings go through the scaffolding and doors on other buildings under construction. But they definitely just stood around hungry.

I have the same issue. I’ve really pushed the workers to sort and resort items. I have a massive sheep pen with wool sitting around waiting for collection.

I’ve noticed with this placing and re-taking of items, it seems to happen more when there are multiple crates (I have a warehouse full of them) that items are needed to be placed into. I believe it’s something to do with backpack storage and relocation of backpack items that needs addressing.

In saying this, I’ve tried multiple different approaches to resolve the issue. It does resolve in time, but not without some extra nudging. Hitting pause and leaving it for a while, allowing the “idle” green bar to build often makes workers active again and finally store items. If I see workers sitting around the fire, or anywhere for that matter, and there are plenty of items laying around, sometimes hitting the “3” key (fast speed) multiple times seems to wake them up. Strange right? Last of all, if I use the “Loot” function over all the food/items/gold around my settlement that isn’t in storage (which is an underground warehouse), the workers often relocate and start to pick it up. It’s where they put it that can be ridiculous. Throw in a hunger meal action and items can be everywhere.

Last idea that works some of the time is making a new save and re-loading immediately. Something resets the working logic and workers sometimes resume “normal” activity.

The big thing I have noticed is that it all does resolve itself EVENTUALLY… but does take some convincing to process.

I’ve had some of the errors shown above, nothing new there. Must be a backpack/storage processing loop.

This is consistent with what I’ve seen.

Yea that’s what happens to me… thanks for posting

The same thing happens to me but its not in the storage.it seems like they have trouble with their inventory cause they just drop it in place and pick stuff in like 10 block radius up again. I Have 4 people picking up each others items all day long. My gaurd and shepard even do it. My gaurd even dies from i think starvation because he is only picking up the inventory stuff. I think all my people will die by starvation even thought there is like so much food even in range of 10 block. they even place food in their inventory but dont eat it. I also get like random inventory errors that say something about start and end cant copy it cause it wont pop up again and saved past the moment.

Whenever I load up a game, A few items act like they are out of a stockpile when they are in a stockpile and Hearthlings are never doing their jobs, because they are stuck in a loop of picking up an item, Dropping the item into a stockpile and the item acting like it’s not in a stock pile.

Yea Pretty F-n annoying (excuse language)

this is a bug that has been mentioned a few times. here’s the latest one I could easily find: Hearthlings just keep picking up stuff in the stock pile then they place it back down

if it’s the same bug, I motion to merge the topics

I believe so.

@8BitCrab, merge needed?

ive had this in my world, seems to be whenever they are asked to loot or gather things

I have been having the same problem…the game has become nearly unplayable…my hearthlings gather in one spot and have a musical inventory war…I have several stock piles set for anything to go in nearby that are completely empty. The more hearthlings I obtain the worse it gets…eventually someone will go put what they have in the pile and walk off, but the others stay stuck for a while… They will even choose to do the inventory war over their job…In the middle of working on an item, someone walks nearby and drops an item, they immediately stop their job mid work and go pick up the item. Until a fix is found I can’t progress in the game…they spend days doing this war until they fall asleep, then wake back up and continue while I have items qued to be placed in the world and work in the job que. Thank heavens I am in peacefull mode or my guys would get killed.

Im just going to leave this here…
