Fallout 3! or maybe borderlands. I dont tend to judge games on their initial impact and graphics alone. The game has to age well and have re-play-ability!
Its tough because now i scan though my memory banks i see other great contenders. Minecraft, Final fantasy 10 and team buddies!
If i had to pick one though… minecraft @MrKrazy the mass effect trilogy was amazing. The ending was like a kick in the balls though. If it weren’t for that then it would be a high contender no doubt.
A lot of people flip flop when it comes to fav’s but surely a fav is not a fav unless it stands above all others in comparison, not just something new? i mean just because the game is completed and was enjoyable, doesn’t mean its no longer your fav?
My gosh… it’s like playing Starcraft and DotA at the same time. I didn’t know humans could play that competitively.
Ha ha… I escaped the worst of the ending because I was a few years late to the series. Not because of the DLC… but because I had endured years’ worth of “the ending sucks!” before actually playing the game! (Astonishingly, none of those comments had any spoilers. I guess people on the internet don’t like to objectively explain why they don’t like things.)
So I had really low expectations, and was actually impressed that it was as coherent as it was! It’s kind of like watching a movie that you thought would be stupid from the trailer… then it turns out to be way better than you expected.
if you couldn’t find the explanations then you weren’t looking haha. We banded together as a group on hundreds of thousands and organised protests to force them into delivering the ending they promised.
I could give very very detailed arguments for the failures and reasoning for loosing their customers faith but this doesn’t seem the correct forum to do so. this went as far as university psychology lecturers giving lectures on the impacts of said ending on the whole franchise.
you have to appreciate we had years of build up between games and promises of a minimum of 40 unique ending and they delivered 1 (people say 3 but lets be honest… they put a blue, green and red filter over the animations to distinguished them apart)
Wow, are you trying to convince me to share your opinion and try to hate a game that I actually loved? I agree that promises were probably made that should not have been made - you shouldn’t promise a branching storyline and then deliver a convergent ending, even if the rest of the games were convergent as well.
But just as you expected something breathtaking and were disappointed, I expected something awful and was impressed. I consider myself fortunate in that respect.
In terms of pure hours sunk into a game it would have to be Civilization II. The game I remember having the most fun playing though is Star Control II!
I forgot to mention Age of Empires, RoR or the Conquerors. So much time spent on those… and growing up I also played tons of Jedi Knights Dark Forces 2. Good times.
Mount&Blade series, especially Warband.
Recently Ace of Spades - not only because of replayability level, but it’s also really inspiring (10+ pages of game design already created…)
Favorite of all time - WoW. Roughly 5 years of memories with my brother and roommates from the beginning of the game. I don’t expect another game to surpass that in my lifetime. I no longer play it though.
Favorite now - Random latest indie game. Endless Space, Gnomoria, FTL, Paper,Please, Don’t Starve.
If you have a good memory for pointless things, then you may have seen me mention mine around the forums:
Civ 3 and Settlers II. I didn’t give Civ 4 a fair shot when I played it and I’m about to start a new game and Civ 5 looks fantastic from gameplay I’ve seen. But I still liked the menu, UI and tile feel of Civ 3 better, even if it didn’t use hexagons (which are so much smarter). I didn’t like Settlers III and never wanted to continue with the series. Why would I need to? II was a-ma-zing.
And my favourite console game has to be the one, the only, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. That game…that game…
You know, I put this question down on the tables at my wedding reception as an icebreaker and got “ARE YOU CRAZY HOW CAN WE PICK JUST ONE?” from multiple people… I suppose I should be happy fistfights didn’t break out.
In that spirit, here are a few off the top of my head: Populous II, XCOM-UFO Defense (the original, though I hear the recent release was pretty good too), Chrono Trigger, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, Psychonauts, Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Dynasty Warriors 3, 5, and 8.
…I guess I’m pretty picky about my Dynasty Warriors.
Well I didn’t play the original but the new one is seriously good. I watched an entire playthrough of it before buying it and although I have actually yet to finish my game, I do have intentions of doing so. How they compare though? I can’t comment on that
X-Com UFO Defense (The Original) was like, one of the pinnacles of gaming. It’s sad that the new one had to strip off some core areas of the game while improving some. (Just like Skyrim did to Morrowind. Can we please some streamlining games?)
So, if we get to say more than one here is my official list.
Morrowind, Age of Empires 1&2, X-Com UFO Defence, Commander Keen series, Space Quest series, Monkey Island series, Spyro the Dragon 1.
X-COM UFO defense is in my list too. I liked that you had a larger group of units in the origional. Every mission some would die. Also inventory system was better instead of classes imo. Base building was better too. X-COM apocalypse would be even higher on my list if they actually put some love into it. The whole dynamics in the city had huge potential. Shame they only made a half-finished product.
The rest of my list:
Age of empires series, stronghold, settler 2 and 3, Age of wonders, supreme commander, sim city 4. Civ series, rollercoaster tycoon 2 and 3. Online games mabinogi and zero-k.
I bet I forgot some
Right now I’m very much in love with Kenshi, even in its alpha/beta state it’s so much fun to play and the devs plans for the finished game are just awesome (lofigames(dot)com).
For old times sake, I would have to mention Age of Empires II. First game I bought for my first PC, played it like crazy and still do sometimes, although I now use a no-cd patch since I don’t want to scratch my CD (one of “my precious”). Only game I remember that only has bg-music when you play with the original CD ^^
