[Dev Blog] Desktop Tuesday: Biomes!

They should fix the custom building tool instead of adding stuff. I cant build anything without it bugging out and force me to start a new game… even saved blueprints cant be placed in the world. They game is unplayable atm…

They 're not going to chase bugs with all the team !
New stuff 's part of their job too …

I sort of agree with Peanut. I’d like a nice mix of fixing issues and getting new features. The games not unplayable though. You just have to get around certain issues when building. Always custom, low roofs, no furniture in your blueprint.

the game is not meant to be playable right now. frankly it’s more playable than it really needs to be right now, considering the game is an alpha.

alpha games are unfinished games. they do not have everything the game is supposed to have, and are often not even considered games because of how much is missing. this is the phase where everything is put together in the first place. fixes are only meant to get the individual parts to work together

beta games are finished games that are buggy. while everything is there, it may not work properly, and it’s prone to breaking. while it’s playable, it won’t always work as expected, and this is the phase where everything is fixed for final release.

while I understand that the building tool not working properly is frustrating (I’m a builder and I can’t build anything but roads, and even roads give me issues), I’m also not expecting the game to really even be a game right now, as most of the features that will be in the final release are simply not here right now. what we’re here for is to find the bugs and incompatibilities for the devs, and to provide insight towards the direction their game is supposed to go.

Exactly. Right now is the time to put things into the game, work out the kinks, and continue to add new things. There’s not much of a point to getting the building system perfect in a vacuum, to then have everything else added in and break it again. The Alpha release is to put things together for the first time, as we find the big issues that need to be sorted out. The Beta stage is where the game is in a mostly finished state, and where the polishing and bug-squashing replaces new features as the main goal, and we’re not near that point yet,

Then bring on the things!

Yea I know what alpha and beta status means. It’s just frustrating that the “game” is more broken now than it was in alpha 10. (I.e. I played for hours in alpha 10 and cant even play 20 minutes in alpha 11.)
Guess it’s just annoying that things are getting worse instead of better…

See, that’s weird to me because i 've only played A11 and I don’t feel its ‘broken’. its still being built and Its quite playable. I won’t say its less broken than other alphas, but it IS broken in a better way.

What I mean is, I’ve played lots of early access games and while other games didn’t have as many little graphics glitches or error report, they were broken in a basic gameplay sense. They werent fun for me. I couldnt think of ways to make it better because it didnt even have a solid gameplay foundation. Other alphas ive played are a mess of ideas thrown together. Stonehearth has a VERY solid foundation. They started with basics and built around them. At least that’s what it seems like. I am pretty new around here.

Ive been playing for hours a day since I bought it less than a week ago.It has sparked my imagination as well as the imagination of my 5 year old son. I’ve not felt excited for game updates since Minecraft was in beta.

I’m not arguing your point or saying you’re wrong. Maybe 10 was better. I’ll never experience that. But this is my experience so far. I hope the future updates impress you as much as this one impressed me!

I understand your point of view. (If you don’t know what you’ve lost, it won’t hurt you). I’ve been around stonehearth since- I don’t know. A long time. Don’t get me wrong. I think the devs has made huuge progress since pre alpha. And added a lot of new content which is cool and all. I love the game. But I just feel this is a step backwards. Before alpha 11, all you had to worry about, was getting to many hearthlings. You could build all you wanted. Sure, you didn’t have a cook then, but I haven’t even gotten to the point of being able to promote one now, before building tools crashes. Tried reinstalling the game because all my saved blueprints just gives me a red cross at cursor when i try placing them. Shared dinning hall crashes the game. Houses are being half built.
But I’ll just shut up and wait until the game is finished, since you’re absolutely right. It’s alpha. (Maybe even pre alpha again)

Ah hah. Blueprints are awful. I’ve had no issues when I make simple, single floor, low roofed buildings. I know blueprints will be rad eventually, but a lot of my first saves were scrapped because pre designed buildings have issues. Not sure if its the fact that furniture being part of a building confuses the workers or if high roofs are the issue.

But hey, finding little ways to work around the issues is fun, too. Feels good to find a way around a problem! I can’t tell you how many ways I tried (and failed, having to reload my game) to make a 2 story building that worked. I had to destroy about 100 ladders and scaffolds but I got it to work. I was soooo happy to see furniture being placed on a second floor.

Sure, the walls get wonky if you switch to half wall down mode, and its ladders or nothing. But that just adds to the list of things to look forward to.

Sorry if I seem annoying but… Man… I have not been even remotely into a video game for a long time. Now I’m pumped!

It’s not like Radiant doesn’t know buildings still need a lot of work. They’ve just reached the point where it is difficult for a handful of humans to think of all the different kinds of building that can be built and test them all out.

The best way to get buildings fixed is to provide examples of buildings that fail. Preferably buildings that fail in exactly one way so that it’s simple to prove when the code for that one way is fixed.

Is this permission to devote my Saturday to trying to make buildings fail and flood a new thread with examples?

Yea I know how hard bug fixing is. I worked at Oddlabs some years ago. But I can’t wrap my brain around having a city building game and the only thing you can’t do is build a city… for the time being I just place workshop on the ground next to stockpiles and avoid using the build tool at all. Wealth can be accomplished by placing furniture in the wild as well

It’s me or this thread is about biomes? :cold_sweat:

obviously, if the title says “biomes”, the topic is the status of the game, silly. I mean, it’s so obvious.

beatrice is here desperately trying to ground the flying train lol
