Which is totally fair and understandable but a little ironic because the more people think like this the more it dimnishes the chances of the project’s success from the get go. Self fulfilling prophecy, sort of.

If the question is having Stonehearth as it is now or no Stonehearth at all I’d take the current Stonehearth (or what’s it gonna be) gladly. That being said, I’m not really arguing against you, just following the thought.

Well they have stated that after the stable versions of the new builder and multiplayer is out the majority of the rest of the year will be dedicate to performance improvements, which means Northern Alliance, titans and more that they still talk about as sure things are planed for next year. So they don’t seam to be in an immediate shortage of funding, though they of course have to aim at and plan for ending the project at some point, like any company would.
If they have to cut more features though then I’m guessing Mac and Linux support would be some of the last things to go. It sounds far more economical to open up the game for new markets than to add a few more features to the game to hopefully attract a few more windows users and keep people happy that have already paid for the game.
Can I also take my oppertunity to push more momentum in this. Why do you have a number trying to get you attention for something you already know about. Pleaase, it is an easy fix. @Sweet, what are your opinions on this.
Something in the back of my mind stirs and tells me this was originally planned after the realease of stonehearth. So unless stonehearth’s release is in the very near future, I wouldn’t expect it to be talked obout that much.
It definately is this, as it does mean that there will not be anything story-arc related beyond a town with the size necessary to get to tier three. There definately is some element of finality here. But it’s also definately not in the content of the game.
But does that mean they’ll back down from it. I quess it is how you want to look at it. They did hard things when they decided they wanted all 3D structures you could design to be buildable by AI. They did the building revamp. But I’m sure you can find examples of the devs not doing something because it is hard. It is an odd mental jump to make, but a common and understandable one if you ask me.
That’s what’s really causing the confusion. The story-arc for the town isn’t the only one. Yes, it’s a town builder and yes technically town progression is somewhat finalized, but there are campaigns aside from that. We have the goblins and the kobolds/orcs, the rabbits are gonna have their own storyline from what I gathered, and I assumed (I could be wrong) that anything that had to do with an enemy that was a larger threat than the kobolds/orcs, for example titans, would have another story-arc. So yeah while that may be it as far as town progression, there is plenty of room for there to be progression outside of that.
Works like @MoonSight’s The Mythical Creatures Mod =temporarily dormant= could potentially add an incredible amount of story. If you haven’t, please do yourselves a favor and check out: MoonSight’s animation post! & The Golem [Creation post] for some truly amazing models and animations.

The mammoth went into the game as a pet in the petstore I believe, but its animations still need to be done/redone.
Being a pessimist is sensible in that every success is a pleasant surprise.
Let’s just say he has his reasons, and leave it at that.
Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts on the DT, whether they were about re-embarkation specifically or about the overall scope and feel of the game. Over the last five years, we’ve become a very close community, one I value a lot. As a dev and as the game’s first, passionate fan, I’ve read all your posts, and felt most of your feelings, if not now, then at some point or other as we’ve built this thing together.
This has been an unprecedented few weeks for SH: between the builder, steam workshop, engine complete, re-embarkation, Tier 3 and multiplayer, we’ve at once accomplished things nobody has ever seen in this this sort of game before (agented 3D building with a vastly improved UI, multiplayer in a community builder) and also pivoted (with engine complete and the ending of the town progression questline) from a place of unlimited possibilities, to a place of polish and fleshing out what’s already there.
Since everyone wanted something different from this game, it makes sense we should all feel differently about where it is now; we got to this place together, and I think it’s good and healthy to take a moment to celebrate all the things we managed to do, as well as mourn all the things that are now out of scope.
My invitation to you is: after you’ve celebrated, and after you’ve mourned, what do you plan to do next? I know the team and I will continue to do everything we can to make the game as good as we can within the many constraints that we have (our engine, our too-vague kickstarter pitch, you name it, we got it). We will be as honest as we can about everything we can, because so many of you have earned our respect. And then we’ll go play some multiplayer in the archipelago biome, because seriously, those turtles and crabs are adorable, and then we’ll go back to fixing performance because it’s still terribly bad and we all want to have 50 hearthlings.
Now: I know you love this game deeply, or at least some version of it, or you wouldn’t be here, at the bottom of this thread. So… what do you intend to do?
I, for one, intend on doing what I’ve always done –
- Do my best to influence roadmap direction whenever my input is sought.
- Enjoy the Stonehearth game I have today.
- Look forward to the game I’ll have tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year.
- Accept the things I cannot change; disagree and commit to the things I don’t like.
- Relish the fact that this is one of the most mod-friendly engines I’ve yet seen, so there’s always hope of getting things in the game I don’t yet have.

Yes, Alpha 24 will be replaced with Beta 1. (in 2 years)
Nothing is out of scope. (anything can be modded in, and we’ll get as much done as we can) OR
Everything is out of scope. (you will be happy about every “unexpectedly in-scope” feature rather than complaining about cut or delayed content)
The scope question is as hard to answer as it is to write a perfectly achievable Kickstarter reward tiers for your first studio developed video game. I really don’t think it’s a fair question to ask. Especially if the devs are anywhere as big of fans of their game as we are, they will hope to the last second that they can cram everything in. I think before anything is truly “out of scope”, it will first be delayed, then adapted into a reduced form, before actually being completely cut from the project.
As for the beta question, obviously I don’t know for sure, but I am getting a very strong impression that Alpha 24 will not be the final alpha before moving on to the first beta. There’s all the obvious stuff, like them making plans and references to plans in streams and on the forums, as well as teasing upcoming content and such. I mean if they KNEW they were gonna go under, would they really say that stuff? But then, also…
Ever heard of Clockwork Empires? I was pretty active on those forums, and that game met the exact end that people here are panicking about – the game released half-done. There was a definite “feeling” by the end of that game’s lifespan, on the forums and in the dev diaries. The death march feeling that I am unfortunately familiar with. I am happy to report that, from my perspective, our DTs and forums do lack that feeling. Not really getting the doom and gloom here.
Though I do support respectfully badgering the devs about the Mac and Linux versions. I just don’t think the scope question in particular will aid anyone, players or developers.
So I’m currently at a loss. Multiple people complain about:
and Team Stonehearth’s reply to fixing this is to just “remove it forever”? For how long, we’ve had the Town Teir progression glaring into our soul just like this notification, and that was never a problem to address even though MANY MANY people have asked to move it off the notification tab due to the same reason. A second one comes along, and we’re now forced to choose;
- Have ANOTHER notification yelling at you, causing you to miss real notifications.
- Or get rid of the option of embarking at a later date.
How is this a reasonable solution? I thought Stonehearth wasn’t going to force players to play a certain way? Yet now we’ve been forced into a position of exactly that.
And why make two new options one extreme or the other? With re-embarkation, I have to choose whether to get new bonuses or keep expanding my town; no middle. Now with this, I have to choose an extra notification or never getting those bonuses. Why was it decided to leave out a middle ground to expand on that “letting players choose how they want to play”? Why couldn’t there be a "maybe later option or just moving it to another quest tab? Y’all have added different new menus before, so why would that be too time-consuming?
Anymore, this game is really starting to feel slapped together and rushed.
Guess I’ll have to wait for the modders to fix this, right?
For Those Concerned About My "Mental Health"
For all those psychoanalyzing me, add this to your list of reasons. Glad I can be part of your psyche study.
Aren’t you watching the stream? He talks more about this… he’s adding it in because people were asking for it (Someone literally asked for a never button). Then he said they would look into making it maybe a ‘ask me again in a month/week’
I’m confused why you missed this.
Re-read what I said. I was watching the stream, and I’m not asking why they’re doing it (because people complained about the notification), but why are they going to the extreme of making it a “Never” button.
That’s what I was referring to, he said he thought it might be a bit extreme, and discussed the option of changing it to a ‘remind me in x time’
My apologies as I guess I missed that too.
