All about Trees

Hey everyone.

I love trees. Especially since it looks like they will allow us to start building our civilization in Stonehearth. A few questions about them.

Cutting them down: Do they just disappear? I feel like it would be infinity more satisfying to see them fall.

Replanting: This was probably said in one of the live feeds, but we can replant, right? If it takes me 3 or 4 trees to build a house, I’m going to run out of them very quickly unless I can replant.

Thanks guys!

no, there will be some sort of animation/particle effects when the tree is chopped…

by the way, love your forum name (fantastic series!)…

I’m pretty sure there will be some replanting mechanism I mean that makes sense right? Perhaps the growth of it will be quite slow.

Also you’ll be pleased to hear that will be different types of tree!

Taken from the collated Q & A:

“There will be a variety of resources which provide both cosmetic and functional differences to your structures. If you look carefully in the trailer, you’ll see at least 3 distinct different species of trees. Maybe a wall made of ironwood is better at holding off a pack of invading goblins than one made of oak.”

(Yes I love it too, obviously)

Good choice of books.

Mhh yeah replanting would be great and well… logical or not? Maybe you will have some sort of specialist class, not only for trees. Maybe some sort of gardener or ecologist for your flora.

You may be able to plant trees, grow em a bit faster, put some flowers down or some herbage for your medicine production. We may see

Just some thoughts which came right now

Maybe we will see a sort of system implemented like that of “Tiber and Stone”. Whereas upon cutting down a tree, there will be a stump left behind that will grow back into the full tree if not removed by your workers.

I was wondering the same things. Would be nice to have some kind of forestry management profession, maybe as a sub category under the farming profession. They would go around planting seeds in a spot that you have designated.

@brendan_ms , brill idea and using them would make the trees grow faster, possibly by assigning them to a seedling they’d wander round watering seedlings and weeding.

Hi! I was just wondering a few things about the trees in this game:

  1. Are trees going to have an animation when they fall down?
  2. Are the trees going to be separated into biomes and patches or can you find any tree anywhere?
  3. Are the trees going to have different uses (some trees good for building, some GREAT for bows, other good for swords)
    a. Different direct uses (building, weaponry etc.)
    b. Different specs for each wood (yew makes GREAT bows, acacia sucks at bows?)
  4. Are there going to be super rare trees that grant something awesome?

This game is gonna be awesome and I don’t doubt that I’ll be satisfied with it, but I would just like to know if anyone knows about this. Or if someone has other ideas about this.

Well, I’ll try and answer your questions to the best of my ability…

  1. Yes, they said they will most likely fall down in a cloud of dust and leaves, and when the dust clears, it will show the fallen logs.
  2. Most likely. Deserts and such probably wouldn’t have trees, and snowy biomes would probably have less and different types. Certain woods are supposedly going to be stronger than others.
  3. Maybe. If not, the answer is always mods. Some would probably be stronger than others, like pine being a simple wood, and other fancier trees may be much stronger.
  4. Maybe. Never stated by Tom, but its a possibility. And if not, I’m sure a mod would pop up.

There is this bit that @Geoffers747 captured in his Q&A Thread

Will there be a diversity of resources to gather and mine to attain different looks? ie: varieties of stone and ore, different tree species, etc.

seemed like a worthwhile merge here… there is another tree thread here as well…

I’m so glad that there will be an animation added at some point for the falling trees. A good reference would be the animation for cut down trees in Starbound. It is very satisfying to cut down trees in that game.

Also it is very important to get a really good sound for the trees as they fall down! Some deep bassy creaking as the tree slowly starts to tip over, then it picks up speed with a higher pitched kind of whine sound, then followed by a loud crash as it hits the ground.

It may sound like a little thing, but it is going to be something we do a lot in the game, so why not make it really satisfying when you do it? Maybe even have a chance for some animals (like squirrels?) to run out of the trees when they hit the ground? Or goblin spies?! LOL! They could be dazed when they fall out, then you could attack them before they come to their senses!

Keep up the good work guys! I am trying really hard to force myself to wait until you guys release it on early access on steam.
