The carpenter stands inside the wall in the carpenters house, the default Radiant template.
I thought that the workbench had been placed in the wrong orientation but after removing and replacing it seems as if the carpenter doesn’t use the front of the workbench to craft rather the side 
I fear that this could have a big knock on effect for his happiness
