I really like Person-At-Arms like Kitty suggested (very medieval) though I dunno how you’d make the class have a different name per character gender and not just be Man-At-Arms, which would not be as functional for Stonehearth’s better society.
But if going to more medieval-esque names, could alternatively try Serjeant, Yeoman, Conscript, Householder? I really like Serjeants, could even be Serjeant-at-Arms for a Man-at-Arms alternative
Edit:
Oh, just remembered a good one. Fits a non-specialized generic soldier but not a fresh recruit/footman:
Retainer.
Retainer is a term usually used by regular official infantry in service of a given lord or army.
(Ooops, sorry! Hate when I overlook things on subsequent passes! >.< )
-edit-
Ohhh… I don’t think I ever looked at the image that showed the tree, my bad
Hypothetically could have switched Champion/Hero and Gladiator in that case?
But, more seriously, am greatly liking your intent here, will be camping out
Oh, and did start playing around with some icons, will offer up any that actually are deemed passable by my mind if/when I get there
I would suggest being careful with using Mercenary, not just because it’s more than a cool name for a fighter, but because someone might add actual mercenaries to the game that you can hire.
Not too fond of using Gladiator either. Much for the same reason but also because it feels like a weird thing to have in the army and upgrade a soldier to. Even if we ignore the slave part of the gladiator it’s like “do you want to upgrade your soldier to a navy seal or an mma fighter?”
Other names that came to mind that might fit somewhere:
Brawler, bruiser, skirmisher, raider, ling-at-arms, minuteman, minuteling.
