Introduction
With the obvious interest among the community to add more races with mods, and my own personal desire to create a race mod, I’ve decided to redo it slightly. This is not planned to make major changes, more just adjust the current design to be more accommodating to having any number of races that may appear in future, official or modded.
Planned Mod Outline
Currently I have it roughly set as to what I expect this to provide, the following list of statements should all be true of the mod by the time I am done.
Practically unlimited space for additional races and locations.
Keeping the ‘storybook’ style the vanilla menu currently has.
Easy addition of races and locations by mod authors, automatic hopefully.
I’m also looking for someone already working on a race mod to help test this when it comes to it, as I’ve not seen any that are released or for recent alpha versions at least.
Due to Alpha 14 likely being released soon, from what I’ve seen anyway, I’ll be waiting until it is released before properly making a move with this mod, this topic is as much to keep me on track and gauge interest as it is to announce my intention.
Thanks for the support! Maybe a little too much confidence in me there haha, was thinking more like the race menu mods for Starbound than SkyUI, useful but not impossible to live without
SkyUI is the same, Bethesda made the menu for Console gaming, so when it was ported to PC, yeah its good that someone made it. Haha… Anyways the part that gave me 100% support is that your helping other mod developers with your mod! I find that very nice, which is also why I compare it to SkyUI because it holds a mod manager! So id love to see this mod grow into my expectations!
I love the idea and support it 100% percent! I can tell it’s going to be pretty helpful for other modders (including myself!) looking to change the Race choosing thing. The illuminated manuscript is a fantastic way to choose the current races, but personally I feel that it’s a bit too simple for everything everyone’s wanting to add. Good luck with the mod mate! I do think, however, that since Alpha 14 isn’t adding anything that changes races specifically (as far as I’m aware) that maybe getting a head start on it would be better? Or it might be better to wait, I’m not sure, haha.
Totally agree with him, btw Spool I love the idea of your Manaforged and when I saw this mod I was thinking, “This will definitely help Spool out with his mod” and look who comments next XD Anyways… hes totally right, the only thing that is a major change is adding that new class, the herbalist, and changing the health system. No new changes to the creation system itself seeing that there is nothing to change.
we don’t know everything yet, so be careful what you say, for all we know TR will come with some surprise feature that could totally change the races or something.
but yes, as far as everyone knows A14 will just be a combat overhaul
That’s what I meant. We don’t know all the details, but with what they provided it hasn’t shown any major change to the creation system that will cause any issues in this mods development.
That much will still be included with my plans I’m looking to keep the feel as the vanilla one does have a certain charm to it that needs to be kept.
I am making a start, I just don’t expect it to be done before A14 is released really, if nothing changes in A14 that impacts the mod then I’ll be supporting A13 too of course.
P.S. Totally had your mod in mind with this as well as my possible future one!
i thought i had, but just realized that i never made a reply to your thread earlier @Neronix17…
i love the idea behind this mod and can see that it will be very helpful. can’t wait for its release! also, perhaps you could also make one like this but for biomes?
You appear to do that often But yeah if you’re meaning like the forest and desert we have now as biomes that’ll be part of this, it’ll cover race, biome and mode (I’m looking into that for a harder difficulty in future too). Hoping to get it to auto-detect all three when someone adds one in the way they would to vanilla.
heh… i think i need more coffee, wake my brain up a bit more.

it’ll cover race, biome and mode
[/quote]oh, awesome! though i would perhaps suggest changing the title slightly to include those things, or to something like “alternate embark menu” , as just saying “race” is slightly misleading if you know what i mean.
Itty bitty update: Found the source files, pretty simple, I’ve done a lot of web dev/design so the interface having HTML/CSS and JavaScript involved makes this a dream to deal with for me. Could be done by the end of the weekend to be honest, hardest part was finding the files for me.
Also great news on the automation front, looks like the game already uses an index for races, biomes and modes, so that will be handled without any extra effort on the part of mod authors.
But it’s 2am-ish here so I’ll make a start on it tomorrow.
So I made a start on a mock up of what I originally had in mind when I started the topic, I’ve now made a couple of adjustments though. There was a portrait style selection for each section but that restricted the number, I figure that having the selection switch through them all using an arrow may take a little longer to reach the one you want but doesn’t limit the number of items that can be added.
Looking for opinions of course, some things are not apparent in a single image, the descriptions I’m hoping to have only show up when you hover over the selection for each of the three, and the text font will be the same as vanilla, I just couldn’t find what font was used, I don’t recognize it so I’m guessing it’s custom to the game. Keep in mind this is very rough so things like lining the boxes up more accurately is still to be done, I did this super quick to get an opinion of the general layout.
What you could do, is if when you press the portrait, i.e. the Rayya’s Children, It will bring up a window with squares giving a preview of all the Races! There can be a scroll mechanic that scrolls through all the options. Campaign Mode can stay the same because its only 2-3 modes atleast, and the biomes I would do the same as the Hearthling Select as I said above. That way it will stay with the original idea but make it easier for you to search instead of clicking a arrow until you get it.
i personally prefer arrows, as i like to have less menu’s that i have to scroll through or open up. unless you meant have both the arrows and the menu, then i’m on board for that idea.
