When i try to build a house with free standing walls (so i can make columns at different places then only on the corners) the game will not let me place doors or windows inside the walls
hmm… just tested, and its working fine for me…
could you perhaps provide a screenshot?

Sounds like a case of columns standing too close to each other.

I find you need at least one block on the side of doors in order to place them, so 5 blocks between columns to place the regular or reinforced doors and 6 for the double or tunnel doors.
