So…this is kinda racking my brain. When placing trees, you start with a 2x2 base. But as it grows, it becomes 3x3 with a center. Is there a way to predict which direction and/or where it’s going to expand into? Trying to do some decorations, but it’s hard when I can’t figure out where the tree will be.
Totally agree, it’s so difficult to plan where you should plant the trees when you don’t know how much space will they take when full grown…
As long as you don’t rotate the saplings when you’re placing them, they should all grow on the same direction, but it’s still hard to predict.
In my experiments, I think for a 1 unit separation when full grown, I used to place them 17 units away from each other (counting from the trunk of the sapling to the trunk of the sapling you’re placing). So 17 units between their trunks. And I didn’t rotate any of them, so they were aligned also in the other axis.
This method still has flaws, like the fact that you have to plant all the saplings at the same time (once they start to grow, there’s no way to confirm the separation that you need. Also sometimes they don’t get aligned with the space of the terrain (for example, next to an elevation I left 7 or 8 units of space, but this might be different depending on the direction of the map, and if it’s a corner of a mountain or something).
I used plushies to help me mark where I had to place them.
I was unaware the they did not grow symmetrical along their axis. no way to tell how they will grow up shy of remembering your last entity rotation?
When you are going to plant them, the block you click with the mouse to place the tree will be its center when it has an odd number width. It will grow to a 7x7 if I’m not mistaken, centered on that block you clicked.
I can confirm what @BrunoSupremo said. The base of the small tree is 2x2 but when you place it you only click in one block. That one will be the centre.
Have fun, Kyth.
It would be nice to be able to stop tree growth.
Often those large trees are just in the way when I want to prettify my settlement.
Does the center block location change though with rotation before placing it?
No. Point your mouse to a block, press the rotation keys and watch it spin around that block.
Hi,
Trees are designed to not grow if something blocks placement of the next size of tree. So if you surround a tree with fences, it should prevent it from growing. “should” Let me know if that doesn’t work XD

Hey,
This blocking is only happening on the ground level, the trunk, of the trees?
Because they grow and overlap their treetops everytime I place them close together (including Z-Fighting).
(Edit: 2867 & 2871, not tried 2876 yet because work )
Hi,
Yes I believe trees are only blocked at the ground level. The leaves will overlap. I think this will happen in trees naturally occurring in the wild too.
