those poor hearthlings are lacking one of the main food groups! bread (and of course wheat to make bread from!)

If you have a look at the Trello roadmap here : Vroom Vroom, Progress! you’ll see the cook has been implemented, but not yet introduced into the game. (probably in a later alpha)
So we can look forward to new recipes which could possibly include new crops to grow.
Have a look at this other suggestion too. It talks about a bakery system which also happens to include bread.

Should be safe to assume the developers have thought about implementing bread among other foods once they introduce the Cook into the game.
