hey folks! so I’ve tentatively stepped back into recording videos… i’m waiting on some hardware to arrive (a nicer recording mic), but in the meantime I wanted to see if anyone had some suggestions for new content?

which game(s) would you like to see a recording for? I’m obviously going to kick off a full LP with Alpha 10, but I was wondering if folks would like to see more of any of these titles:

  • Delver
  • Rogue Wizards (trying to get the latest dev build)
  • Deadwood (should have the latest build soon)
  • Rimworld
  • Minecraft (hey, its very relaxing to play!)
  • PixelPiracy
  • StarCrawlers
  • StarBound

let me know if you all have an interest in any of these titles, or any others you would like to see! :+1:

I’m certainly casting my vote for these! Glad to hear you’re making more videos!

Pixel Piracy, only because I keep almost getting it.

If you pick up a server, I’d be more than willing to ā€œhappen to play togetherā€. Just like days 1-13 of the early Glowstonehearth days :stuck_out_tongue: maybe pop in and out of videos

I’d recommend Minecraft and Starbound especially if you have people to play with. These two games always seem to be strong channel series when you have a good (and funny) team to support the recorder.

I’d maybe suggest the latter, just because Minecraft seems to be on a decline right now–maybe when some new substantial content comes out, it would be a good game to play for a new series. With the updates recently, I figure there’s some interest in Starbound.

And of course, if you are looking for additional members for a series, I’d be interested in helping out, so long as I have the game in question! (Apologies for shameless offering of gaming. I’ve been out of multiplayer sessions for a while with academic work, and I’m hoping to get back into it)

thanks for the great feedback guys!

I honestly hadn’t even considered a group recording, but the idea sounds like a blast! :+1:

ok, now you’re talking about big boy stuff… streaming? eesh… well… …

sure! what could possibly go wrong!

Personally, I’d wait on streaming until you have a few strong series going, or if you announce it ahead of time with the intent to try out a brand new game either to you in general or for your channel, and gauge its popularity in real time.

Of course, this is coming from someone with no recording experience for YouTube or Twitch, so this advice comes more from my observations on other channels! Really, it can come down to whether you have the time to undertake long stream sessions and whether the games you’re playing have enough opportunities for you to interact or involve your audience (such as making decisions in-game or naming characters and pets).

Also, don’t Twitch streams get removed after a while? If you want your recordings to stick around for series, you’ll need to back them up and post them anyway on YouTube.

Yes indeed, that’s why streaming isn’t bad you automatically create content for your youtube channel

it really does (mostly) boil down to this… my free time is at a pretty extreme premium these days…

i’ll just work on establishing some semblance of a ā€œscheduleā€ for releasing new content, and go from there… :+1:

new recording equipment arrives tomorrow… :+1:

I think I’m going to work on a video intro this evening, but I’ve noticed lots of folks don’t have them… what’s the consensus? are they necessary?

I was also going to work on the 30-60 second ā€œchannel introā€ video… you know, where you give brand new visitors a brief summary of who you are and what the channel is about…

I think those are pretty worthwhile…

Intro videos are pretty nice–just make sure it’s not too loud at the start. There’s a couple of channels I follow that come blaring right at you when their page comes up, without a chance to reduce the volume on the video while they browse the uploads.

Unless that’s the atmosphere you’re aiming for, of course. Just remember that the first ten seconds or so will be seen fairly often by the viewers (as they decide which video to watch).

Intro’s are usually not added any more because viewers like to get into watching the video’s instantly, And also to @Atralane point half of them are way to loud. outro’s are always good. I’ve always kinda liked intro’s but it seems like so many of them are just trying to make you deaf. So I wouldn’t call them necessary as such but they work well for newer channels.

Also making a Channel intro is really good for new subs. it’s why my channel is so awesome cause its missing all the important things

Anyway can’t wait to see future video’s from you! I subbed

You sound like some college professor in your videos @Steveadamo! Keep up the great work!

hahaha… agreed! the (typical) jarring techno intros are a little overdone… I was thinking something a little more ā€œfriendly upbeatā€ā€¦ I’ve found some great royalty free tracks at bensound… :+1:

well, thanks!

I was mainly referring to channel intro videos (which I find useful, but get seen very often and shouldn’t be too annoying), but yeah, having intros in videos isn’t something I find too necessary. If it’s highlighting interesting or funny things specifically from that video, it’s fine, but most videos I watch don’t have much of an opening. Those that do rarely go much longer than five or ten seconds, just giving their channel logo or something (which even that is debatably unnecessary, since you can also have it on your main page and at the end of the video).

What, you don’t want to be like:

ā€œHi, and welcome to Stonehearth, a cutsy, voxel-based city-builder!ā€

I find streaming to be an incompatible commentating style to video recording, you have a live audio and you tend to be talking to them. It can be frustrating to viewers that they are only seeing half of the conversation and not part of the conversation. Where recording you are trying to have a conversation with a viewer by yourself but still trying to make them feel like they are part of that conversation.

I agree, Vintagebeef’s I tend find are amazing intros, piratically his Mindcrack piano intro
