are you being sarcastic, or is this really a “thing” in DF? either way…
Everything makes dwarves angry. They kill and destroy and don’t go to prison. But if one fails to meet the deadline on a production order they get in for 3 months. It’s dwarven law.
No, they do. But if you have a hammerer they are more like to get their bones broken.
Yep. Entirely possible. Even the instant necrosis. I think Slade might be worse, though. Either way, if its Adamantine, its almost completely invulnerable. However, any ‘gas only’ Forgotten Beast will often not use normal attacks, so if you have a vampire somewhere, you can throw him at him (vampires don’t breath), which would fight the thing unopposed.
If they aren’t really already very happy (my dwarves normally are, because I engrave the entire fortress with Masterwork carvings using my useless dwarves, so they all have orgasmic thoughts every time they open their eyes), yeah these will set them off.
Also, when they go insane, they rip off all their clothes which could cause dwarves to tantrum because naked dwarves are ugly.
I don’t think Slade was possible to get, I reckon it wouldn’t be worse though as adamantine would already require something stronger than it to defeat (It’s the strongest for people who don’t play). As for the vampire then just hope it doesn’t get attacked by a melee attack or possibly change the ability to a spit or blood or the like? Maybe web too to make it completely immune to traps. Also add impair organ on top just to give that little bit of extra oomph.
Started up Masterwork and am playing a (mostly) above ground fortress. I have stockpiles and such underground to save space, along with housing because there’s no way I’m making houses for each of these orcs.
Did I mention I was playing orcs? Yeah. They confusing, especially without a real fleshed out wiki to help you out. Also, all civilized races are at war with you. So, humans, elves, dwarves, etc. will attack you with REALLY powerful armies just after your second year. Elves will start ambushing during the second year. But as orcs, you have strong warriors, who can be equipt with somewhat easy-to-get yet fairly effective bone weapons and lamellar leather armor.
Once this fortress goes down the tubes, I’m going to make another orc fortress-- this time it will be a Pirate Cove. I will send ships all across the land to plunder the civilized races, as punishment for forcing the great Taiga Orcs from the Great Hunting Grounds. They will fear our warriors as we storm the beaches and ram their ships.
Also, once the current fortress is destroyed, I will write a little ‘story’ regarding the events surrounding its life-span.
just so you know “hostile races” are friendly to orcs, such as humen bandits, drow, goblin, chaos dwarves and so on
Everytime I started to play, I got lost in the wiki (out of enjoyment and curiosity) and never really got around to playing. I will second your support of the Lazy Newb Pack.
As for tilesets, I went with Ironhand because if you go get that tileset seperately (it’s included in LNP) you can use the tileset editor to tweak it, for example to get diagonal corners. It really bugs me to think dwarves were walking through two touching corners.
If you want to learn this game, and possibly get an even more updated version of LNP, watch arumba07 on YouTube. His LP’s are very much like tutorials. This was his most recent series and if you watch enough you’ll find tutorials on minecarts, trading, Dwarf Therapist… all the necessities. He also has a Masterwork mod series that was posted several months before the above linked LNP “Ideneral” series.
Buuuuuut, I’m skipping DF and hoping that over time, SH will grow to comparable complexity and depth thanks to an enthusiastic and able fan base.
To me, playing DF vs. SH would be like the original X-COM vs. the new X-COM. Purists will always remember the good ol’ days, but the new has great potential and is growing.
Embarked on a cave.
Cave troll came up and ate my miners. Killed it with a spearmen.
Then the random guy I gave one of the pickaxes to collapsed the entire cave and killed everyone.
FUN
I’ve discovered that I have way too much “Fun” with Dwarf Fortress mode, so I figured I might as well load up adventure mode, in some vain effort to add another legend to my world of legendary failures.
I started off as a Dwarf demigod (I know, I’m a pansy), and set all of my points into wrestling, dodging, musicality, and various other traits. I figured that since the game is driving me crazy, I may as well play crazy. Meet Crazybeard. Demigod of singing to his enemies while dodging their blade or choking them out.
The game got off to a slow start, as it turns out no one wants to follow a dwarf who quietly sings to himself while walking around wearing nothing but a helmet and a boot. Soon, however, the best encounter ever occurred.
I had just completed a quest, and was doing some grinding in a forest. After a while, putting coyotes into headlocks just sort of lost its charm. Thankfully, I found a Sasquatch.
My initial greeting of chucking a rock at his head was met with some hostility, so I figured why not kill the beast. He charged Crazybeard, who dodged out of the way, then proceeded to gouge out the Sasquatches eyes. From there, Crazybeard climbed onto the Sasquatch’s back, and choked him to death.
There’s just something so beautiful about a mostly naked dwarf demigod, leaping onto, gouging the eyes out of, and then strangling a seven foot Sasquatch.
that’s slightly over the allowance of words than can comfortably fit on my t-shirts, but i will keep the quote regardless…
It’d make a good bumper sticker though.
brilliant!
Damn, I was in the midst of doing that.
I would buy that sticker
That sounds amassing, i;d buy it if i had a car, or any way to actually buy it.
So, I finally got around to downloading it… but what’s the difference between SDL and legacy?
Oops, sorry, took a quick hiatus, SDL is a lot of the newer stuff, whereas legacy would be the DF “Classic”.
You will die just as much from either one.
Ah, thank you, my sadistic brother. Now we can both die simultaneously!
Well, I was browsing around a bit in the Discourse, when I saw this topic. I remembered Dwarf Fortress: I gave a crack at it a few months ago. I thought, “Hey, it can’t be too hard. Everyone out there saying how difficult it is must be chumps!” So, I went to the Bay12 website and downloaded the Windows Version. I right clicked it, and pressed Run.
After watching the pleasant intro scene, clicked “Start A New Game”, and just kept the settings for world generation as default. Once the world was done generating, I read the area around the screen and decided to embark somewhere in a generally adequate area. Pressing E, I had no idea what to expect. What a fool I was…
Well, after embarking, I saw 7 smiley faces rotating around a bunch of brown symbols, around a bunch of green symbols. “What is going on here?!” I thought, my self-belief slipping a bit. I spent the next ~30 minutes awkwardly clicking and, later, desperately smashing any combination of buttons possible. Well, to be honest, I ragequit and didn’t look at it for a few months.
Well, now, I’ll be better prepared: I’m going to make an 18 dollar investment in book called “Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress: Learning One of the Most Complex Games Ever Made”. Hopefully, it’ll go well and I’ll have plenty of fun!
(Sorry for the necro )
(Here’s the link for anyone interested: Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress - O’Reilly Media)
(It’s actually kind of funny that O’Reilly published it, seeing as it mainly publishes in-depth, technical manuals. Well, I suppose Dwarf Fortress does fall into that category )
Well This Necro is forgiven for the reason that this topic was actually pretty entertaining. I had the same experience as well. Couldn’t figure ANYTHING out. They do not joke about it having a learning curve, I usually learn a game pretty quickly but this game is just evil
