I would, but then i would have to re-learn my meagre skills in DF. By which i mean, give me a somewhat settup fortress, and i can keep it going for a year, with a minimal amount of “avoidable death”.
playing with routes and minecarts are fun, CAT, DOG AND GOOSE MEAT FOR EVERYONE!
So the update is live, and the new stonsense allows you to play entirly isometrically:
OMG!!!
Ah, so DF can finally be played without having to understand what the ASCII characters mean and not having to deal with the horrifying controls.
Awesome to see they are pushing out new releases. I’ve just been using the Lazy Newb Pack for the last couple (?) years or so and the Phoebus Graphic Set while running therapist and Stonesense alongside it. Glad to see it’s more integrated.
Maybe i’ll fire it up today and see if I can survive in a harsh winter climate.
BTW, as far as I know, Dwarf Fortress is still in Alpha, so, do you think that when the final release of the game comes out, which may be in twenty years, will replace the ASCII characters with more modern graphics and be in 3D?
20+ years? I’ll be surprised if it isn’t a Holographic game by then.
(I wish atleast. Would be kinda cool)
I don’t have a link for it but i found a article about it where he stated he was making this his life work and he said that he could se version 1.0 being released in about 20 years.
EDIT: Found the link
Keep in mind that it is 3 years old.
This is incredible that he will stick with a project this long.
Well, with Dwarf Fortress being in ASCII graphics for this long, it’s kinda become a part of the community: the most hardcore of the fanbase can actually interpret what’s going on. Removing that would be, like, removing the creeper from Minecraft, or SteveAdamo from the discourse.
Well, he would probably include the option for both considering the ASCII will be archaic in 2034.
mouse support
Now I might try that interesting game finally.
He’s going to run out of symbols sooner or later though, given how complex DF is already.
@Swift_Cube Im not sure I agree. Plenty of hard core players use tilesets for very good reason, I spend all day looking at text, and code on a screen, and by the end of the day I quickly develop a headache at the ASCII graphics, the tileset is just different toughen that I don’t get a headache. I know toady will never make his own graphics and im gald, but I think we are going to see better and better overlays such that a time will come where only the nostalgic will use the ASCII graphics.
Welp, I thought that the update was more recent, like this month, come to know now it’s been out since April.
Hmmmm, last night’s necro posting seems to have been rather disjointed. I’m just really confused now. Either way, I can play it now.
(Must have read the date from the previous post)
Huh? It hasn’t been, has it? I’ve been following the devlog, pretty sure it’s only been out since July 7th… right?
Right you are, right you are
Wait so does the new update make the game any easier or does it just open the opportunity to mods?
@Teleros mentioned this:
Dwarf Fortress lp, and i read it all immediately. Now i encountered a lesser problem… I wan’t more, but i don’t know where to find the good ones. So i thought do you guys know any good lp’s preferably with a texture pack for the pictures because that makes it just a bit more understandable.
Strongly recommend to watch a few lets play videos for starters.
