@Pepe Wow I did not expect such an enthusiastic response!
In fact I am not a native speaker of English myself, but I have read a lot (and written a bit), so aside from being an aspiring(wannabe) author in German as well as in English I cannot claim any professional status.
If you can afford to wait a month - as I really want to win in the April NaNo Camp - I would be honored to help you out and I am sure we will find a mutually agreeable trade.
looks great. What is that blue thingie?
@SteveAdamo haha thanks mate, i will try to keep you folks here in the loop.
@PDanford no worries, there will be much more time needed to even finish the first batch of cards and factions than a month so we’re not in hurry. i will contact you when we’ll have some material that you could work with. i wish u best luck with the NaNo camp!
@Miturion thx sir, yeah to be honest i don’t know what the blue thingie is… any creative ideas for a name or where this chap could live? atm for me it’s a nice looking blue blob and an important step / model production wise. i will talk about this in the next post. stay tuned
@Pepe that looks fantastic! Keep it up!
Qubicle 2 will support STL. I haven’t implemented this yet though, but it’s on my feature list.
Errr i’m just like… OMG have you made the frames with QC too?? and then how are you going to do to print it in paper?? or the cards are going to have somekind of relief?? isn’t it better to work with some pixel-art tools like photoshop?
Just… GJ dude, your work it’s amazing!! and it’s wonderfull to see how someone can work on a full board game just with basic tools (well a 3D printer it’s not basic but… u’re not in a big enterprise it’s what a i mean), i’ve never seen an indie board game designer, but you look like one of them :p.
Btw i’ve a question… it’s this the first board game you’re developing?? and why are you making it if it’s your first?? I don’t want to be pessimistic, but isn’t it too hard to release a board game? Are you a professional board game developer or this is only your hobby??
Seriously, gj! see ya!
I would say it is a Glorthar… though I have no idea about what a Glorthar actually is!
@Tim AWESOME! you’re my hero Tim! looking forward to send you my first native exported Qubicle 2 3d-print!
@Raistlin thanks a lot for the kind words mister. yeah QC might not the best tool to do pixel art but for sure the most fancy one as you can just turn the camera a little to go from 2d to 3d in blink of an eye haha. the cards will be printed old-school style on cardstock, but if there would be an option to print 3d relief cards count me in!!
yeah this is my first board game i’m developing and it’s only a hobby for now. can’t say why i want do this but as a long time board gamer and tabletop fanatic since childhood there was a point where i had to do this! for sure not for the money as as you can’t publish a board game for money…you just can’t…at least as indie designer. but the Stonehearth team and you guys on this fantastic community gave me the inspiration to go for it and make it “voxelized”!
@PDanford now Glorthar sounds perfect! also not sure what Glothars doing all day long…
now about this blue “thingie” in the post above… as mentioned, we really want to make our board game as accessible as possible but with a pinch of nerdiness of course. therefore we decided to optimize the game to be as much as possible “print-to-play”. to play our game you will need card decks from us and quite a few pieces like coins, resources tokens, figures and custom dices. this would cost us a fortune to produce these injection molded plastic pieces in small quantities. also the most important factor to that speaks against conventional production is the main goal of creating an open game universe with as much as possible opportunities for the players to be involved. we want give you the chance to create your own story, figures and content to play with. this is why 3d printing is key for us and we believe it’s only a matter of time until all of you will be having access to a 3d-printer near you.
but with this mind we just can’t count on hi-res SLA printers that prints wonderful smooth parts with every tiny detail visible. we’ll need to make our game parts in a way that every cheap 500$ printer can handle them as well. so this gives us some restrictions while modeling the stuff. we can’t count on a second support material that allows us to print overhanging parts like the rips of the skeleton. also tiny details will get lost as the accuracy of these printers in not that great atm. this is where this blue “thingie” from from the last post comes in.
i designed this blue potato with the restrictions in mind and therefore split up the body in two halves. you will need to glue the two parts together but this allows us to create more complex designs. it’s like the seaming line in injection molding where the parts also needed to be removed from the mold and therefore have no undercuts. this might sounds like tech blabla for u but i hope you get the idea…

so i would love to make a shout out in a few days and announce a small competition here for all the talented Qubicle folks out there:
Design a monster, character or even a whole tribe for our board game universe with these restrictions in mind. The winner will get his figure 3d-printed and hand-painted by me!
…hold on, hold on, this is just an idea and i will set up a new thread for this with all the info and competition details when we are ready. but let me know if you think this would be fun.
cheers
Pepe
@Pepe Just by the look of his happy face, it seems that he likes to swim a lot, because it floats, but don’t step on it while it’s sleeping in the water (it seems like just a normal rock when it’s sleeping) or it will double his size and eat you alive… unless you offer him some gold; yeah. It loooooves gold. xDD
If need you more Lore for your creatures just tell me!! i’ve a hyperactive imagination xD
OMG a competition where the price it’s his figure 3d-printed and hand-painted by you!?? I’m IN!! if i had some time to play with QC again… T_T
Anyway, what would be the maximun size (in voxels) for the model?? maybe… 20x20x20??
OMG I would love to participate, too
Just don’t forget to give a detailed explanation about the constraints of the design.
Good story, @Raistlin
Sweet! I would take part in said competition, though @Relyss makes for a tough competitor…
Stone golem was what came to mind when I saw it, if that helps.
You know, I never really won the Qubicle competition. I’m usually lazy and sometimes I lack imagination because that day I felt especially sleepy.
So, give your best try and don’t worry about the rest of participants [quote=“Newf, post:314, topic:203”]
Stone golem was what came to mind when I saw it, if that helps.

Pebble was what came to mind when I saw it. Although I also like Glorthar. It really suits him, yes
I don’t like it that much but its @Pepe’s game so I don’t care either way.
@Raistlin haha awesome, what a nice Glorthar story! i wonder what you come up with if you see my latest printed chaps… i would love to pick your hyperactive brain for more fantastic lore!
@Relyss great, yeah i just need to figure out how i want to do this. i will explain all the guidelines soon.
@Newf was thinking about a stone as well while modeling this guy…
does a bear sh… is a frog’s a… umm…
yes! most definitely yes! this would be fun!!
another would be for the writers to have a challenge of some sort as well
@SteveAdamo haha
@blackArcher52 i was thinking about this as well as i know some of you are highly skilled in telling storys & lore. so yeah i will most definitively try to do a writers challenge as well!
ollrighty it’s getting colorful! here are my latest additions to the 3d miniature collection! i have designed all of them with the restrictions i told you in the posts above. so every model here is a two-part model. next goal would be to make a multipart monster but this will need some more planing.
don’t be shy if you have creative names and lore for the new guys… this is not my strongest part, as you know i’m more the “create-some-fancy-stuff” guy.

can’t wait to play our board game with these figures, but still tweaking a lot in the background, especially on the board and the game mechanics. these chaps might even lead us to a whole new game idea. we will see… moarrrr soon!
