Isola - The 2nd Expedition

It has been many cycles since we last heard from the first Isola expedition that was sent out.
We can only presume the worst of the island venture. So we shall try for another venue with our next crew rather than following the path of doom taken by the first.

Our new crew:

Our scouts have found this interesting territory for us to venture to:

At seed coordinates: 1361525365.
While the enclosure within the mountains to the south was tempting, the elder has pushed us to head towards the south east enclosure on the waterfront. Our people are quite drawn towards lakes…

And apparently, we are not the only ones:

We have decided to pay our respects and are settling near the ancient one. It is time to go setup camp, the log will be updated further later.

Woohoo I can’t wait for the Isola to “dig in”

the fact that you call bunny statues “ancient ones” is seriously one of the best things ever… or maybe i’m just super sleep deprived…

My inspiration for that one, @8BitCrab:

But from the hearthling’s perspective, well…

Day 2:

We have started filling in part of the unsightly pit; the longer portion has been deemed ideal for use of establishing a mining quarry. Our carpenter, Kari, put together some crude beds for the settlement to make due with for now, and we have begun clearing the way for construction to begin. Katrina took one of the hoes that was crafted and started a small garden patch to sustain us until proper farming can be set up. Hyla has begun hunting in the south-eastern wooded area with fair success in terms of meat and pelts.

There was much surprise when Addie Perry turned up on the shore; it is suspected that she was exploring the waterways and was wrecked in the night. She has been accepted into our budding community and set to work. With the younger set of hands taking over some of the work load, old Lorzen moved away from the general task load and took up the mason’s chisel.

The ground patch has been placed.

Our esteemed leader is far too pleased with this work, for something that hardly seems like beneficial progress.

Rufus Garrow the Stonecutter passed by late in the night. Our leader was eager to trade with him, selling the stock of log chairs that Kari made (for 20 gold pieces each, impressively enough) to try to buy up as many of the resources he was offering as possible. It was enough to buy out his stock of copper and stone, as well as five each of the iron and tin, plus two lumps of coal. Greedy for the rest of his resources, our leader sold off some of our food stocks from Katrina’s stash, as well as all of Hyla’s pelts and jerky. When this was still insufficient, the leader distracted Rufus with chatter while waiting on Kari to craft up a stock of wooden dressers to trade to him despite her other listed work orders. It was a long night, but in the end the leader got all of the resources that she coveted, which made her quite pleased.

Day 3:

Rufus left early this morning, and with so much of our supply stock leaving with him, it is unsurprising that he is the only one we saw on the road.

But perhaps if we hadn’t been so focused on clearing the land, we would have noticed the wolf that snuck into our encampment prior to it assaulting Lorzen’s rump.

Lueis responded to his cries of distress with great bravery, grabbing one of the wooden swords from the stockpile and leaping into action to save the elder mason!

And with it slain, its tattered remains left strewn across the mason workbench, none with prepared to argue with Lueis’ decision to remain vigiliante as the first protector and guardian of the town.

…though there was some concern for Lorzen, who did not wait until his area was cleaned before determinedly returning to his work orders…

In light of Lorzen’s survival, Kari used her time of the day at ease to plant some carrots at the feet of the Ancient One, as an offering of thanks and bribe for continued good will.

At a late hour, Norm Windriser the Woodcutter wandered across our encampment with supplies for trade.
Our leader shared some food with the travller and was regaled with tales from the road, before making an exchange of some of Kari’s hand crafted furniture and Lorzen’s dabbled stone crafts, along with the pelt of the slain beast and some of the others that Hyla had acquired, for five very comfortable beds that have caused a call for the laying of the foundation of a resting lodge.

I love the story so far.

Day 4:

With some concerns for safety after the lupin assault, construction has begun on gated stone walls to try to secure access to the encampment.

It was disheartening that no one was seen travelling towards our encampment while they were being built - some fear that despite our triumph over the furry attacker, perhaps the wolves claimed a life out on the road. For now, we have only speculation…

…speculation, and a mean little stone golem

Or rather, a pair of them:

Our scholar found this surprising… we have very little stone and much wood, we were expecting wood golems to plague us. Odd creatures.

Thank you so much!! That’s very encouraging ^.^

A lovely tale of some lovely adventurers! Lorzen definitely needs some “rear protection”; a pair of pants made of stone, perhaps?

Day 4 continued:

Yumi and Hyla opted to simply ignore the little ankle swatters, running right by them to continue collecting supplies to bring in so that work on the Lodge could commence.

The golems seemed confused and disapproving of this.

Lueis’s stone maul, however, made them discuss a need to change their need for attention.

Unfortunately for them and any change of their stony little hearts, Lueis simply would not stand for them having tried to assault the ladies of his community and dispatched of them.

The building plans for the miner’s lodge has been passed from the leader to the workers. And while some question her sobriety when she drew them up, none are willing to do so aloud and thus we proceed with them as they are.

As night approached, the foundation was dug, to be laid in the morning.

A caravan came in the night, offering three comfortable beds in exchange for a single wooden sword. The trade was eagerly made, though for some of us, this pointed towards our fears about the current dangers of the road.

And some have come to wonder just what kind of contacts our leader has, that the only traders we have seen have always come after the sun has set…

Our fears are not unfounded! In the night, goblins tried to sneak into our encampment with unsavoury intentions!

They ran right past our unfinished wall! Oh, if only Lorzen weren’t still so sore and making such slow progress on it!

But Lueis was having none of their thieving ways!

And Hyla spotted their encampment not far from where her traps were laid:

Our leader, in her infinite strangeness, lamented that there was no way to safely relocate their campfire into our settlement…

Lueis was not terribly sympathetic to this and simply smashed it.

Day 5:

While work is still in progress on the Lodge, our leader also commissioned a partial design for a warehouse and requested that it be started on immediately. There is some confusion about the name on the plans, which reads “Warehouse 1101” despite being our first such infrastructure…

Today also marked the arrival of a new member of the community when a man came drunkenly running from among the trees, shouting that squirrels were trying to take his hair.

Or at least our initial suspicions was a drunken state - Hyla observed bits of mushroom crumbs on his front that suggest he may have imbibed some of the brown fungi that grow out there. Whatever the case, when he settled down, we learned his name was Tomas, and that he had much experience with various herbs and tonics… while the statement was met with suspicion, we were not inclined to turn away a potential Herbalist, especially while poor Lorzen’s backside still aches him so.

Progress is being made on the Miner’s Lodge, and Katrina thought it apt to move the berry bushes over to line the walkways, so that the workers can easily snack when they come up to rest.

She has also suggested the idea of turning one of the side rooms into a kitchen where she could prepare proper meals for the workers, but this is still in debate among the population, as their are some concerns if she is yet experienced enough to take up cooking.

Entlings! Entlings hiding among the fallen trees!

Actually, their assault was sudden, but not terribly surprising, all things considered…

Though, yet again, Yumi simply ignored the would be harassment - this time, scurrying up the scaffolding and acting as though she were simply focused on the task of building.

The little jerks followed her up the ladder!

A few good claws to the heels forced Yumi to finally acknowledge them and flee the scene; fortunately for her, Lueis was more than eager to jump in.

Which… proved to be a very good thing indeed…

It marked the first battle to convince Lueis to actually pursue some well deserved rest.

…but courtesy of our scouts, he may not get to rest long:

Late in the night, the leader went out and met with a rugged survivalist named Jess Vexed that approached the settlement. Some of us were the ones vexed by yet another late evening arrangement, but despite the small load of foodstuffs, hides, and fine quality lanterns disappearing from the stocks, few were inclined to protest about the bundles of wool and bolts of leather brought back. In fact, Artificer Rinkusu was so inspired when she saw them, that she started assembling a spinning wheel and loom to start working with cloth herself.

Day 6:

Leuis ran after the wolves, and was nearly vanquished by them. Fortunately, he managed to limp back to the encampment and into a bed. There was a collective sigh of relief to see him on his patrol today.

The leader, apparently quite annoyed with all the resources simply lying where they were gathered, sent out an order forbidding all tasks that weren’t related to hauling. Everyone is bustling to fill the stocks, stopping only to greet a trader that passed through late afternoon who offered to bring 4 bolts of cloth in return for 7 farmer’s hoes. While we have no real guess as to why he wants so many, Kari accepted the task and intends to have them ready when he returns in 3 days.

This is a short and rather uneventful daily log, to be sure, but cleaning up is a necessity and was thankfully not interrupted by any more nasty things trying to visit.

Day 7:

Work has resumed on the miner’s lodge. Even the workaholic Kari has come to help build, with hopes of seeing it completed today.

The other workaholic, however, got no vacation, as Lueis was sent running when another wolf was spotted when it decided to come try to make a snack of the communithy:

Hyla claims that she heard him yelling, “Snack on my shield, foul beast!”

Like its brethren before it, the wolf was simply no match for the mighty, devoted Lueis.

One would wonder if he was destined for some great fate such as knighthood, if such a thing actually existed in our lands.

There was some quietly expressed surprise when Rufus Garrow the stonecutter actually came during the daylight hours to meet the leader. He seemed a bit disappointed at the lacking food stocks, but other arrangements were made to satisfy the leader’s zest for his wares.

As he was leaving in the later hours, however, a disturbing sight was noted:

Everyone was a bit surprised that the leader did not act in greed for the treasure, but rather told them to keep quiet for now, even cancelling all work orders in that area, and went to Kari, requesting that she try her hand at blacksmithing for a while to make Lueis some better armour. Perhaps his close call with the three wolves had more impact on our leader than we realized. Unfortunately, Till has yet to master his craft well enough to make a hammer for Kari…

And Lueis has noticed the abomination despit the leader’s efforts…

Victory!

Though that is not to say the leader’s concerns were in vain, as Lueis did take an exceptional beating.

Despite his scarred arse end, there is much pressure on Lorzen to get that hammer made, so that the fierce warrior can be decorated with a proper suit of armour and weapon worthy of him!

Day 8:

It has taken much effort on the leader’s part to quell premature celebration as the construction on the miner’s lodge draws near completion. The appearance of a small fluffy bunny hopping around the bushes in front of the site has been taken as a sign from the Ancient Ones, and they have spent the morning focused on nothing but the building.

Indeed, the workers may have taken the sign a bit too much to heart, for when the little bunny left to pursue food for itself…

Lorzen followed its lead quite literally.

Hyla, however, decided to not let the opportunity go to waste:

The leader had never seen such a feat before, and was entirely uncertain what to make of it, or do about it. She has granted the critter honorary citizenship in the community, while uncertain if it needs to be fed, penned, or otherwise, deciding to trust that Hyla has some idea of what to do with it.

When Havaad stopped by with his merchandise, everyone saw the leader give long consideration to the padded vest he had in his cart before turning over some of her prized oak saplings to buy it for Lueis. While she kept a collected expression while bartering for the spools of thread and bolts of cloth also among his wares for sale, there was no denying the smile that met her face when the guard donned the gift.

Even if Lueis himself doesn’t seem to understand what the glee was all about.

He chalks it up to the completion of the eastern gate

Though there was definitely no mistaking the leader’s squeal of delight when Lorzen’s new workshop was setup:

For that meant that he was finally skilled enough to make the Blacksmith’s Hammer she had been waiting for…
