Summary: Heartling doesn’t move anymore. Saving and re-loading doesn’t affect. Closing and opening the game also doesn’t.
Steps to reproduce: There is none, it just happened all of the sudden while digging foundation.
Expected Results: Heartling can follow paths that don’t involve flying or going through mountains, floor, ceiling or walls.
Actual Results: Heartling is not a child of the root entity. Cannot follow path.

I got the same issue. It looks like you can fix this with no lingering consequences by selecting the orphaned hearthling, opening the console with ctrl+c, and issuing the “reset” command.
Is there a way to kickstart a frozen character. My carpenter has gotten stuck standing still with restocking items and will not make anything. Don’t know if there’s a way to wipe his queue and get him to pick new tasks (presumably the right ones.)
Yes that seemed to solve the carpenter. I now have a couple of workers who had a LUA error that says they are not a child of the right thing to follow their path. Saving and restarting did not help those losers. If finishing the house doesn’t help, I’ll hopefully try the restart thing.
Restart didn’t help. One guy is on the ground, and one has a valid ladder path. I get the following error:

Yeah that didn’t work either. Finishing the building didn’t stop them. However one guy who was on the ground was saved because I made a cleric and the combination of starving and getting healed forced him to go get food. The girl on the top of the house would not path down no matter how many ladders I put up. I actually had to demote my cleric because the cleric was starting to starve because he was going to the root to heal the woman there over eating.
long time not written in here, but with the new patches i had to take a look into the game again ^^
In here, i want to let you know, that i got exact the same error.
I’m using “Entity Editor”, click on the Hearthling and click “Update” in the editor. With this the hearthling
is free to work again.
Until now i can’t say while it’s happening, it seems to be real often and nothing special to trigger this.
Edith thinks about:
Ah … i forgott, i’m not getting always the error while hearthlings stuck. But i’m always able to release’em with the Entity Editor. Perhaps in the actual state of the game, some sort of an “got stuck” window could help finding all stucked hearthlings.
No trouble, glad the report helped. I think it may be endemic to particular hearthlings. The guy who was saved by the cleric and starving who ran to get food? Exact same guy is now stuck down in the mines where it says he’s restocking but is just running in place again. I got the same LUA error seen above for him. I don’t know why he’s particularly susceptible to the problem. Poor Backster.
I am not sure what this Entity Editor is. Is that a console mode or something for the game?
My Hearthling just runs in place. Its every time i make a footman and he doesn’t move from that spot just keeps running in the same spot then dies from hunger.
Thanks for any help!
Note: He moved when a enemy gets near but if he gets stuck again i dont know what to do
As of yesterday, 9 June 2018, I am still getting hearthlings frozen in place and starving. I get the warning “xyz is starving”. Going back to the menu and then reloading the game re sets them. I am on the latest build from Steam Alpha 24.
