I’ve been using the ib console cheat to pretty much insta-build all my buildings. This got me thinking.
Why not have an insta-build option next to the Build it button?
The button would be greyed out if you do not have all the resources and windows/doors needed in your supply. The system would check if you have those (there is already a global inventory system). It would then set a gold price based on size of the building.
You click that and the building uses up the resources it needs and it instantly builds. Additionally you’d get a charged a gold fee.
For people that want to watch the building come together, they will still have the old option. The insta build option allows us to put together buildings that would otherwise cause Hearthlings to get stuck, or create massive Lua errors.
This is also very useful for the later game, when it becomes more difficult to monitor and micro-manage building construction as your village size increases and your attention is on other more pressing matters (adventure part of the game, diplomacy, etcetera).
No way, insta build is a just a dev tool command to gain time and could not be a normal feature in the game. Else there is no point in coding and debugging during months the “normal” building process.
And after all, if you go this way, we could add insta mine, insta gold, insta food etc, and apart cheaters who cannot stand the normal rhythms of the games, none would have interest in playing such game.
I’m with Beatrice on this one. Building is like, the point of the game. I don’t begrudge you for using it right now (since the Hearthlings seem to have some serious trouble building stuff these days), but it definitely should not be an option within the gameplay itself.
To be fair, I IB only to make sure there are no problems or glitches when my heartlings are building things. Example being missing connections to roofs, scafling still being left up, etc…
Yep it’s way more comfortable but if all of us goes this way, who will spot bugs, report and help? I mean wanting our buildings done and well done is clearly understandable but is an Alpha the place for that? I would say no, we cannot expect that at this stage, eventually on a beta perhaps…
Having something to spend gold on would be nice. Right now, the only thing you can spend gold on is stuff you can just make yourself, making it largely redundant. In theory, it does help to be able to buy goods like leather, wool or cloth that are locked to later professions, but that’s an edge case. Most of the time, we’re being offered tables and chairs and beds.
I think you’re on the right track, however, in that gold should be used for more “abstract” benefits. Things like bribing away angry goblins/human bandits, lowering one’s immigrant requirements, or unlocking certain class types that aren’t crafter-based (politicians don’t exactly need a steel-nibbed pen to do their job, yanno).
