Goblin engineers?

Just a thought:

Goblins can currently be isolated through wall building, something that will become obsolete once they’re able to tear down those walls.

Another way of isolating them is to build a trench:

Those marauders have been sitting in their camp(fire) for the past 30 minutes, contemplating their life choices…

My suggestion is a wave of goblins that may occasionally spawn containing an engineer. This might be complicated in terms of AI, but this unit could a) breach walls, b) build ladders up/down cliffs, and c) create small plank bridges to cross trenches. If there’s a combat unit buildup that hasn’t been dealt with, they’d all swarm in at once, giving reason not to hole oneself in.

Any thoughts? Would the AI coding be feasible?

Or… Bat riders…

But yes, I agree they should have some way to try and figure out a path to get to your village, through siege engines or boats, or by mining their way into your village.

If all else fails, they can just wait outside your walls/trench/moat for migrants and caravans to arrive and slaughter those so you can’t use them, thus forcing you to act.

Personally I think building ladders would be enough. Regardless of trench or wall, they’d scale it.

I would love this. Traders stop coming to your town, you no longer gain citizens, ect. You’re cut off from the world.

that was my thinking also.

yes as a stage 1 update (as radiant does it in stages) but i think should add variety in the next stages of it

Well yeah, but… bridges and explosions? how can you say no?

I was thinking along the lines of keeping it simple. Why over complicate it?

Bridges could be understandable for water, but regular trenches, not so much. And explosions? Are we trying to make Creepers for this game?

Don’t forget mines! I’d love to see some frustrated goblins dig a tunnel underneath my town and blow the tavern to bits, making their way into my fortress through its smouldering ruins

no. its just that goblins are known to love their explosives

Yeah goblins really like their explosives (Though sometimes it’s fire)

Ok, when you put it THAT way…

I would love to see insane goblin bombardiers spawn occasionally. They would run right at your wall (cackling insanely) and blow up (using the awesome explosion effects highlighted in another thread), leaving a hole in your wall. No wall? They they run up to a building and explode. You need to take them out quickly, but the other marauders etc would try to protect them until they can do their thing.

kinda makes me think o’ the siege of Helms deep…

I’m not sure if it’s an engineer of sorts… but it was fun to draw!

Not sure if he’s bored of making all these work-arounds to get into the Hearthling’s towns or just focussed…

Here’s a thought, and it’s thanks to that picture that made me think of it. What if there’s a Goblin Engineer, who produces Bomb Goblins? Like an actual smart one in the group?

Bomb goblins as in clockwork goblins he crafts? Or living minions that run about carrying a bomb?

The engineer could at a lower level, just make bombs for them, and a higher level engineer could send clockwork.

Something like this:

I believe they were called Goblin Sappers in Warcraft 3 and are exactly what you’re describing. They lived to die and loved doing it especially in the vicinity of ones buildings :stuck_out_tongue:
