Keep in mind, they have alot of stuff they want to add before sep. 2014 Isn’t that a great thing to look forward to? Just this time we have Stonehearth Alpha to kill some time with
First and foremost - Minecraft and Stonehearth offer two very different experiences. Comparing them in terms of game play and features really isn’t useful. Don’t get me wrong I love Minecraft, but those early builds really didn’t contain much in the way of content.
I appreciate that everyone has their own style of gaming, but for me the fun in Minecraft comes firstly from the multiplayer and secondly from the singleplayer. Whilst Stonehearth multiplayer is (hopefully, why wouldn’t it?) going to be fun, the single player experience should provide enough entertainment to satisfy your needs.
That persistent world goal was lofty and obviously wasn’t met during the Kickstarter. The team have expressed a desire to be able to offer that in the future, but it will depend on the popularity of the game and time. Do not expect anything like this, I would guess, until at least 2015.
I don’t think the game will be different on Steam. You might just end up with a more automated update-feature and be able to launch it via Steam. Maybe the workshop will be even used for mods…
initially, it looks like we will be re-downloading the client with each new update (based on a comment from @Tom in the KS comments section)… and given that the modding aspect wasnt specifically mentioned, theres a good chance that modding efforts would simply be overwritten with a new client…
for these early clients, we may have to manage the mod work a little more closely… just speculating, of course…
edit: said quote
eventually we will have an auto-updater, but initially you will have to reinstall the game. I believe Steam will autoupdate the game if you choose that route (Steam support is a very high priority for us)
I don’t mind, I’ll just make it a habit redownloading it each day haha:D And steam… I’m not sure if I want to play it through Steam.
Owh and @SteveAdamo Will there be some kind of Account ? I can’t recall anything… Except for having no controls for legal versions
Absolutely fantastic, I have been waiting for this moment for almost 3/4 of a year now. You guys have made great progress with this game and I can’t wait for the Alpha. I will be strictly following the development from there like a religion! Glad to have funded such a great project!
in order to download the client? yes sir…
the specifics arent known just yet, but (assumptions ahead!) i wager it would be a humble bundle account, etc. you login to HB, view your library of games, and get the most recent SH client when its available…
well… welcome aboard @tingty!
Sounds like they have a good handle on the whole thing here. I went through this whole process with Don’t Starve and can understand why you won’t be able to save games, at least initially. While frustrating, they know that your old level will break on next update and I’m sure they don’t need to spend valuable time fielding questions/complaints about why/how your game save broke. - but still, you’re playing and would like to carry a game from one day to the next, at least until next update.
Note to modders: I leaned this from experience. Don’t expect any of your mods to work when each update rolls around. As the game code evolves, it will more than likely tread all over the code you based your mod on. I spent weeks keeping all my DS mods working because they broke with each update. Some broke beyond repair.
precisely… thanks for pointing this out! it is indeed customary, especially during an alpha phase, to just assume that each new build brings with it an entirely new game start…
@NonBritGit… This should be a sticky or something!
If there’s one thing I appreciate, it is the candor of the devs. There’s always something about not pushing things forward, and keeping things behind a closed door, which make supporting Kickstarters (or the like). I always find it difficult to believe that hiding adversity, and pushing things back is a good way to approach things! That’s why I’m extremely grateful for the updates and the discussion that the devs are having with [future] players! Refreshing. I can’t even evoke in words the frustration I had with Baldur’s Gate: EE when it was first under development, and to hear that a release was pushed back by a few months. Had there been an open discussion, instead of simple ambiguity, I would have been okay with it! Sure things are a bit sketchy, broken and still under construction, but we’re making progress! Palms sweating, mouth watering BG was pushed, and so was my heart broken. I appreciate SH peeps in keeping me in the loop. Thanks for that! It’ll be even better for me to ultimately get to the preview and report problems, because I know that my candor will be appreciated!
I’m sure heartbroken over the fact that you can’t save, but then again with Prison Architect it was the same! Saves were continuously broken. BUT! What that did make me do, was learn to play a bit better. Each time some little tweak I made, seemed to make a difference in my playstyle. It’ll be extremely fun to first go through the ropes of continuous experimentation! I might find some other bugs in the process, which would be hard to find with the comfort of a saved game. By the time saving hits the deck, I’ll be poised to truly take on the challenges of Stonehearth!
First post here! Hope we all get along. Sorry for the lengthy, dream-like monologue. I’m prone to exasperating prose.
Welcome @Delvon I share your pain about BG, and agree with what your saying about the dev team, its been amazing to be included so much in their project.
BG was a huge disappointment on that end! There are still a lot of issues, such as some promised “extras” for pre-orders (which will never be delivered upon, I’m sure), in the production of the games. It’s kind of hilarious how they bragged about the recent huge update to BG1, which turned out to be pretty substantial, yet it was all delivered in a chunk. Sure you guys worked hard on it, and it was great in the end, but there’s something very dishonest about holding back and then just throwing as much as possible at once just to create an illusion of substantial progress. Candor, and slow updates would make a big difference. Do keep in mind that my knowledge of how to produce games is very limited, so in a lot of ways this rant might come from a place of entitlement and ignorance. In which case, take it as just the mad ramblings of a life-long gamer.
A comparative can be drawn from applying for jobs. Everyone’s probably applied for a job, and only assumed that they didn’t get it, because of simple absence of communication. Did I, or didn’t I get the job? Please just let me know, so I can move on, no matter what! I guess a parallel can be drawn into a multitude of different life experiences then.
Well, you won’t find any of that here. The developers care about their game and their fans.
Also, welcome to the forums @Delvon
I’ve been more than pleased to note that that is the case! I’ve even managed to get a few of my friends convinced that there’s something interesting afoot here. It’s an easy task, when you can show something else beside ‘proof of concept’ YT videos from months ago.
welcome aboard @Delvon!
excellent first post… and fear not… lengthy, yet well written, prose will earn you favor with the forum gods…
and by gods, i mean @Geoffers747… he’s multifaceted…
I moved 12 posts to a new topic: I will think of an appropriate topic name at some point
Hey, how come I didn’t get the official “Welcome aboard!” when I joined in May?
Oh well, it’s too late now.
But, eh, whatever. No biggie.
@Delvon If gods won’t give you fear! WHAT ABOUT GHOSTS!? just kidding, welcome aboard Great first post!
@SteveAdamo @Geoffers747 We should make a sticky off al the good things said about not having safe from the beginning… so that when Alpha is released and people start flooding the forum with it… we can redirect them there
There will be a sticky of sorts. It’s currently in the works
