My city is barely having any intruders, and my footmen are just roaming around or helping in gathering materials. I wonder, wouldn’t it be nice to have the footmen level up through sparring with other footmen?

They would have to train a lot, though. Or else leveling would be too easy.

Agreed, balancing is required for this.
Now that we’re expecting archers, it would be a nice experience to watch them do target practice and such.

Yes, please! We should be able to craft training dummies and archery targets and create training grounds. This would be so useful! Dwarf Fortress and Gnomoria do this very well.

perhaps as well it could never raise you past level 1 or 2?
I like this, and this also would mean leveling would take longer, which I like. Right now the quick leveling is great because end game lag hits you fast. When the game gets more fleshed out leveling of everyone will seem way to fast if kept the same.
Yush, sparring/training would be nice. With a level cap, but maybe even trainning sessions would train stats? That way if you end up getting loads of low body hearthlings and need that military, you can atleast train them to serviceable body.
