Random Crash to desktop 1-20 minutes in

Morning!

I’ve been getting random crashes since I bought the game. I’ve tried following the steps on here. Compatibility mode, updated my nvidia drivers, Kaspersky is disabled and ive added an exclusion to windows defender junk for the entire steam folder. I’ve also tried launching as administrator and still get a random crash. I’ll paste the log and I’ll try to upload crash if it lets me.

Windows 10 PC , 64 bit.

I’m looking at this now. Recently updated my work laptop and I somehow broke Visual Studio, it might be a little while before I get it up again - sorry :disappointed:!

OK, so I’m seeing the following in the crash dump, which would seem to indicate a memory issue. But, you have 16 GB of RAM, and just over 3 report in use at the time of the crash.:
Exception Code: 0xC0000005 - The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access.

There don’t appear to be any rogue DLLs being loaded, so that should rule out antivirus interference, and your logs show that your graphics drivers are reporting the most recent version. Your troubleshooting steps list everything I’d normally ask, so I’m really not sure where to go from here. Perhaps @Relyss or @Albert can see something I’ve missed.

Is it possibly a hardware issue with ram? Other things seem to work ok but maybe they recover.

Possible, yes. Likely, absolutely not.

This is a null pointer dereference inside the Nvidia driver. Things to try that might help diagnose the problem:

  1. Play in windowed (not fullscreen) mode
  2. Disable multiple monitors (if you’re running multiple monitors)
  3. Disable High Quality Graphics in the Stonehearth graphics menu

Otherwise, this is a bit surprising of a crash as the Nvidia drivers are usually quite stable.

I already play windowed.
I do have two monitors though, and with a nvidia 970 should I have to disable high quality graphics? :frowning:

I don’t think you have to, since my 560ti was able to handle them, but just try it for the sake of finding the error.
If it still crashes - no problem there
If it stops crashing - problem there

Nvidia shouldn’t have a problem with high quality graphics, but we’re just trying to narrow down the problem.

Are your crashes happening when running with multiple monitors active? That’s the only thing left that I can think of that might be the source of the problem.

So far seems like disabling multiple monitors might be working. Any idea why that crashes it or what I can do to prevent crash and still use my other monitor? :smiley:

Still testing but we’re a bit over an hour in and no crash on single monitor.

Graphics drivers are…well…finicky. I had a strange multi-monitor issue on my old laptop. Stoneheath would fail to start 4 out of 5 (ish) launches when playing on my laptop - however, it would work perfectly fine if I had an external monitor connected. I spent hours troubleshooting with Albert, and we never found a root cause.

Curious, how are the monitors physically connected to the computer? Which monitor is working?

Both monitors are connected to the 970’s ports. I only tried with my main monitor so far.
