PCGamer about Stonehearth

At least no-one said anything about Hearthstone… that really drives me up the wall. If only more people knew that Stonehearth came first and/or that similarities are not necessarily copying.

I feel like Radiant should almost ask reviewers to put a disclaimer at the beginning of their reviews explaining this (like PCGamer did) due to the number of Youtube comments saying stuff like:

StoneHearthStone

or

Isn’t Stonehearth just Hearthstone backwards?

 :palm_tree:

Especially because Hearthstone is Stonehearth backwards

Nah, Hearthstone is Enotshtraeh backwards. :yum:

A few things that no one seems to get:

  • Not all town-building games are:

  • Banished

  • Dwarf Fortress

  • Gnomoria

  • Not all voxel-based games are:

  • Cubeworld

  • Minecraft

  • Not all games with management and/or simulation, even though they may be inspired by it, are ripoffs of

  • Dwarf Fortress

  • Radiant is forthcoming, honest, and keeps communicating. There’s no reason to expect they’d suddenly disappear like the developers of

  • Cube World

…sigh…

Back to Stonehearth! Yes, it looks very Minecrafty indeed, as every game with blocks does, and the developers have stated that Dwarf Fortress was a major inspiration as well.

Okay, internet, do you understand that this means it was inspired by the gameplay of one game, and uses voxels kind of like the graphics of another game, but that doesn’t mean it’s a blatant ripoff of either game or any game with similar graphics?

Stonehearth, developed by Radiant Entertainment and currently in alpha, was announced in 2012, when it had already been in development for a year. Hearthstone, Blizzard’s popular collectible card game, was announced at PAX in 2013 and came out a year later. So, no, Blizzard won’t be suing the pants off the makers of Stonehearth unless they’ve got access to a time machine.

Okay, internet… do you even know how to read?

Dear lord, the comments on PC Gamer are relentless! “This is just cube world”? “Stop using blocks to be lazy and sell out on Minecraft’s success”? “This is a watered down dwarf fortress”? “This is just a 3D dwarf fortress”? Do these people even look at the game before they comment?!

Yeah, it’s kinda sad to see people that have no idea why minecraft was popular and yet say that SH is trying to copy the way and get popular that way

The thing is… in my opinion Minecraft was never popular because it was made in a voxel graphic, it was the way you can expand it.

The voxel graphics are definitely a charm of a game, but the possibility to mod the game and that you could do almost enything was the charm of the game, not just the graphycs, you could run around in the world, build some awesome things, play with your friends and mod the game to be the game you want, and that was the biggest strength of it

Cubeworld (witch i bought)

The charm of it for me was the beautiful terrain and designs of the game, and to be honest i might have liked it even more if the graphics was more cartoony (and i also enjoied the battles that were often pretty challenging)

SH definitely has it’s own charm of customization with mods and stuff, cuteness (heh), peacefulness and more

Point of this ramble being… only a idot or complete troll will write comments about SH being a ripoff
(I could have sed that waaay more shortly…)

And yes, i was never gone.
I was just… not visible

PCG is a decent enough news site, but their community is… well, let’s just say I prefer the old git’s brigade of Rock Paper Shotgun, where if a comment gets posted that is clearly flawed, plenty of people will chime in to challenge it.

Still, it’s good to see Stonehearth getting some mainstream coverage. Everything helps!
