While I had been searching for the mythical red flashing block that kept my hearthlings from constructing my new temple, I found this… glitch of some sort. Allow me to give you a little bit of a backstory.
Keep in mind, these are two separete structures:
The wall (red) is already finished. The temple (blue) is voxel on voxel touching it. I’ve spent some time peeling off a one-block layer at a time to find the problem, that is keeping me from building my new structure (hence the floating windows). After I peeled off the road which I used for the bottom of the pond, I noticed, that a part of the red wall has been torn off as well… It’s whole outside the builder, but appears to be cut away when the building mode is activated.
Having this cool situation going on, more stuff continued to happen. Upon clicking “build” on the temple, it said that there are red structures I should attend to. For some reason, those invalid structures were not my alien floating windows. I’m pretty sure it meant the wall.
The outline around the wall whilst it’s correct on the shorter side, where it’s encapsulating the structure, the longer one makes no sense. It actually goes around the wall, selecting only the empty inner space.
The red invalid structure appears to be the bottom blocks of the wall.
I think I’ve figured it out and found a bug in the process. If you create your structure next to one that has already been built and there are invalid parts in it, you are not going to get the red blocks to show up. I destroyed the neighbouring building and they have started to appear.
This may be a dumb question, but how exactly are you peeling off one layer at a time? Are you deleting it or somehow using the slice tool? I have a mysterious issue somewhere in my fortress and I can’t find it either.
The troubleshooting that works for me:
Is your bulding absolutely adjacent to another one that has been already completed? If yes, create a save for testing and either destroy the finished build or save your fortress as a template and place it elsewhere. The red blocks can appear then.
To peel off layers, use the hole tool and cut away one block layer by at the time. Remember, that the blocks only flash red for a limited time, you might need to click the build button repeatedly.
I’m sorry you are having trouble with your fortress
Thanks! There are no nearby buildings, and I already tried cutting it away- I didn’t find it, and I wondered if cutting it away was changing it and making the red block buildable, but I didn’t think to keep pressing the build button. I’ll try that out!
