Hearthlings want to pickup stuff which is not there anymore

Summary:
After killing some enemies, my hearthling got the loot and transported it a long way back.
But two heartlings were send to pickup the same loot which had already been taken.
Both hearthlings wanted to make sure that the item was gone before going back … WHY??
