Hearthlings stuck underground, refuse to take the stairs

Summary:
After mining deep into the earth, the Hearthlings can no longer find their way home and are cold and hungry.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. dig a long winding staircase deep into the earth
  2. wait for hearthlings to come home
  3. watch hearthlings starve

Expected Results:
hearthlings use stairs to return to the surface

Actual Results:
hearthlings do not use stairs

The row with the two stone and two clay blocks, there is a two block high gap.
