There is an awesome island that is just far enough away from the mainland that makes it impossible for enemies to spawn as long as you keep to the island!

The people even spawn on the island.

I am just going to stay on the island to maybe 35 people then expand.

You can manage the same thing with the desert on a small outcropping.
