I think steampunk inspired robots could fit into an improved mechanic tree. Limit to one per mechanic who is in charge of their AI and they could be sent to do manual autonomous labor but moves at a far slower pace, able to carry far more than a hearthling, never rests but breaks down over time unless Mechanic repairs. Should not be able to build, that requires more intelligence than they should have.
If only for thematic and aesthetic reasons I’d love to see the Engineer be able to either build clockwork workers or single use clockwork soldiers. It’d be resource intensive, but it’d be enjoyable to bolster your forces in an emergency with a few automatons. It feels good to use manually activated special items, as established by the potions.
Geomancer golem I would like to see as a large “MONGO SMASH!” type summon for big fights. Although if it could also mine or chop wood with PUNCHES that’d also be hilarious.
I get the feeling this type of content is pretty straightforwards to add, and like everything else once the many gameplay systems are refined the actual content will come thick and fast!
Ethically there’s not much of a difference and I don’t have a problem with it (though I understand if the devs consider it to be a problem that optimal play includes killing your own people).
The problem I was referring to is that i means that the requirement of a soul doesn’t work as a limit to how many robots/golems you can make. At least I’m assuming that the requirements to get a new hearthling goes down if one dies, which means you can kill one today and get a new one + a robot tomorrow. It could make balancing difficult and it would probably mean that the player would eventually have to decide to stop making robots for performance reasons. In the case of limiting hearthlings because of performance reasons the devs can at least give a story reason like “the town is getting crowded so people stop moving there” or something like that.
I like the though of saving a hearthling by putting the soul in a robot. It could be a way to get a more advanced and heathling like robot and get back at least some of the skills of the fallen hearthling. But there would have to be something else that limits how many you can make.
And I would personally hate having a limit without a story reason to why there is a limit.
