If I try to run Stonehearth, it shows up very briefly in the task manager and then goes away. I have installed it via steam and also via the direct download/install option (both separately when testing)
Version: Alpha 5
Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit)
4GB Memory
Intel Core2 Duo
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9442&SUBSYS_24701682&REV_00
) using driver 8.97.10.6 from 6/20/2012 (latest available)
I don’t see anything in any Windows error logs and the Stonehearth log isn’t very helpful.
I’ve tried playing with a few things like changing settings in stonehearth.json but nothing is making any difference.
stonehearth.log after trying to run:

As @not_owen_wilson said, it’s probably GPU related. Try updating all of your drivers, even if they are not for the GPU. Then, try doing a clean install of the game, hopefully when you do that, it does not ask for the key you need for the alpha.
I didn’t think there was a new driver because the AMD auto-driver finder tool didn’t indicate that there were any newer drivers. Since I was running a Microsoft driver already I figured AMD simply didn’t have a Windows 8 driver available.
I am now using the AMD driver for my Radeon HD 4850 date 4/24/2013 version 8.970.100.0 and it’s working great!
Also, there was no gfx.log file when it was crashing. For completeness, here it is now after loading the game to the menu and closing it.
This happens often, that’s why we are always telling to double check or go to the manufacturer’s website and look there. I’ve also suffered from this in Alpha 1.
