Why Mod in Alpha?

The title says it all. Seriously, the versions will just keep changing again, and again, ruining the mod. I would wait until the game is AT LEAST in beta.

It gives you an idea of what to expect when modding really. Like picking up on LUA and seeing how everything is defined in game. Modders know that with each new version of the game the mod will either be broken or not work at all. It’s all fun in the end though, trust me.

Same reason people mod Minecraft. It keeps changing and people just fix their mods to adapt.

I’d say it’s for the love and the fun.

And the Versions don’t really break mods at the moment, it’s more often a opportunity to upgrade the mod since we see more and more features as we go on

And yes, the risk is definitely there with the beta and stuff, but as long ans there’s people that are willing to take the risk, i’m sure at least some will be there to fix it up

Oh, yeah, did i mention it’s really fun?

i gotta say, @Hyrule_Symbol summed up my thoughts.

modding is a fun and joyful thing for some people, me included, so really its not that big of a chore to update your mod all the time. and im saying this even though i just barely have started modding.

I have never modded in my life, sorry if I’m being ignorant.

no worrys mate.

another thing to note, not all mods break with every alpha, only those that effect files that are changed.

You get a chance now to understand the systems while they’re still cute and small. Later on, they’ll be huge, intertwined, dependent on fifty other things-kind of thing monsters that are difficult to understand.

Plus, you can form the API right now. While in development, API changes are easily done, but in a released game, this suddenly becomes much, much harder.

Bonus point: It’s not that much change. I would go on a limb and say that most of my mods from Alpha Build 6 (that was January 2014) still work, or only require a few very minor changes. Because the modding API is basically what they build the game with too, it’s not like they’re going to change the whole thing over night, although for example the recent AI pack introduction did rustle some jimmies I can imagine.

Well if you have only seen modding done for minecraft and other games then yes it is usually very frustrating to mod as with nearly every update mods brake (escpecially with minecraft as they sometimes renamed pointers with no good reason). But stonehearth is built around being a mod itself so even if you dont understand modding yet it is great to get into modding as you can just look at the stonehearth.smod file and learn that way.

I personally saw the “how to mod stream” by one of the devs and decide to give it a try myself with no experience before that ( I don’t even know any programming language). At first like the first hour or so it was confusing but as I go along I learn more and I am starting to have more and more fun with it. So for me it is mostly the experience of modding is why I am doing. It is just greate to see something you worked on for hours come to life in stonehearth.

I’d like to add that many people on the forum that are trying to make mods have never modded before (myself included).

It’s for the fun of adding your own content to the game, and Stonehearth is intended to be easily moddable so it’s a good opportunity. And I also agree with @RepeatPan, right now the systems are still small so they are easy to pick up. Later it may be a slower learning curve (or not, if eventually a SHED is finished)…

The updates I have to make for Nihonjin are basically adding a few data components here or rewriting a json there. Not hard to do at all, just gotta find the time to grind it out and make a lil more content

Worth it in my opinion.

I’m not saying I hate mods, I love mods, it makes every game better. One of my friends is a modder and he always complains about version changes so.

then he is not truly enjoying modding…

People do it for fun, basically. It’s another way to enjoy Stonehearth. I’ve been meaning to get into Stonehearth modding a bit myself, as I’ve modded other games before, but I haven’t really had the time yet.

Hahaha to be honest I don’t think I’ve actually sat down and played an actualy game of Stonehearth. :open_mouth:

That’s the modder’s spirit!

Now that I understand how mods work, I want a mod that expands the soundtrack because the soundtrack is currently 3 songs.

well @Raj has made quite a few pieces for stonehearth, they have yet to be implemented. and they most likely will come when the seasons/weather is implemented.

edit: take a look at the “stonehearth soundtrack” playlist @Raj has on his youtube channel,

I’d say 9 or so.

Even if these are variations right now, there are indeed more songs waiting their moment to be introduced. But yeah, that’d be a nice mod until they add more music to the game.

Wow there’s 9. Still that’s pretty repetitive.
