What hinders YOU to start with modding?

Exactly
All the links from Voxel_pirate i found were also linking to an error page.

Thanks for trying though, @SteveAdamo!

It might be worthwhile talking about the file structure of the vanilla .smod files, as well as an overview of some of the .luac files. I really think this is the sort of thing that should go in the Wiki though. It can be less than straight forward finding particulars on the discourse, especially if you are not sure it is there to begin with. And with things changing constantly not knowing where to look to get an idea is just another step to be taken before you start.

I think we should start moving a lot of the known facts over to the wiki, we could even leave the conversational style (and/or link back to the discourse if context is needed). There are a handful of threads I’ve found that would be helpful, and I keep finding more every couple of days (this being the most recent). Considering that modding is a huge part of the game (one of the main reasons I got it) it would make sense that the wiki would cover aspects of this.

For me it is that I am not very proficient in modding… so everything I do takes a lot of reading and other research like tutorials. I am at a very basic level so that constraint on my time is definitely taxing on me. Also with this being an alpha everything is subject to change so that possibility that what ever took me hours to add to the game… may become undone and I may or not have the ability or know how to fix it.

I fully intend to make some mods for this game… there are certain things I would like to add to the game to make it a much more alive and rich than it already is, but I am waiting for a more finalized moment (or a time when I have a huge amount of time to work at something) to begin a large project.

I signed up just to look into modding the game.

Given time constraints, I think the biggest hindrance for me is lack of organized information on getting started. I have combed through some of the [Tutorial]s in this category, and they come across like I should already have some information (or tools) that I do not. It isn’t clear if a given tutorial is up to date or not.

There doesn’t appear to be a good ā€œGetting Startedā€ Modding sticky like I normally see in other games, so I am assuming a comprehensive well organized post has not emerged yet. (even if it is just links to other good posts)

Right now, instead of using any Dev and Art skills actually attempting to mod, I am spending a bunch of time searching and reading. I am hoping that will eventually pay dividends, but it does hinder progress.

Only a very few, if any, things are set in stone. Albeit breaking changes are somewhat rare they do happen. They are working on an official documentation too, some drafts can be found in the game files, but nothing concrete so far.

When it comes to lua modding, there’s about zero resources available because there’s only a handful of people doing it.
