then anything within the U-shape is blocked off for building walls.

This also seems to happen if there’s construction currently in progress, if you’re trying to place something inside of it. I usually build a barn to store food, and when it was still in construction (the floors had already been placed) I could not place a stockpile inside of it until the building was finished.
