  1. I never heard of Discourse before the Stonehearth kickstarter campaign but once I got used to it I really like it.

  2. There is no need for a duplicate forum on another site whether run by the Devs or other people. I don’t think I would like to log into several different forum everyday just to check the news and maintain several sets of similar conversations in both.

  3. I think any Fansite needs to find a specific Niche to be able to survive long term. This could be a modding site or file depository, etc… But not a mirror of the official forum.

Personally, I really dislike the Discourse format. I haven’t looked at SHK except from the quick click on the link, but I would much rather have a traditional forum format than this … (no offense) hunk of junk.

I respect everyone’s opinions on this matter, but I find it so very annoying to have everything dumped into the same place, without a way to get into certain categories. Especially for when I am on a touchscreen (which I use when I’m browsing, and my PC for gaming mostly) that I cannot hover over these images to see what they mean.

Are you aware of the ‘categories’ button at the top of the front page?

Which then takes you to the category section with the top post describing each section?

This is the same argument that was made last time we had this discussion. People act like they are incapable of clicking a link. The only real difference here is that “new posts” page is the main one where the forum directory is usually. That page is still alive and well here. You just have to bother looking for it.

yes, the original hosted instance was fairly small, and was unable to handle the (and im paraphrasing here) “extreme awesomeness that is the stonehearth community”… :stuck_out_tongue:

however, thanks to the appeasement of a few lesser deities, as well as @supermathie’s expertise, the SH discourse forums are now back and better than ever… he even threw in the new forum smell!

im not sure what is meant by a directory, but i can see it being a hub for mod downloads (with voting, etc.)… :slight_smile:

I hadn’t ever heard of Discourse before SH either, but I like it. I feel like I’m not missing out on anything with Discourse. Also, if the “organization” is giving me trouble, as said above, the “categories” section is always there for me.

Great to see the discussion here! Especially thanks to @erlend_sh for bringing it to our attention.

I don’t view Discourse as a “replacement” for other, alternate communities who have different preferences and wish for a traditional forum. XenForo is also a very good choice, easily the best traditional forum out there! But it’s not free, and it’s not open source.

Discourse is a new open source project, only about 5 months old, but we are improving as rapidly as we can. We’re working closely with stonehearth to make sure their Discourse forum is as awesome as it can be – and we already see a few features we want to build to make this community better, and every future community that uses Discourse. We want to improve the fabric of the web with awesome open source forums that are 100% free to the world forever, much like WordPress did with blogs!

We find that a simple flat list of recently updated topics works great for most communities, until they get quite large. However, I did want to point out that there is a categories view that is very popular with forum traditionalists. You can get to it at any time by clicking the “hamburger” menu, then clicking the word categories.

It looks like this:

So it gives you a “birds eye view” of what is going on in each category of the forum.

You can easily make this your homepage by bookmarking

If that is more to your liking! (It’s also possible to make that page the default for the whole forum, if the owners decide to.)

I feel like Categories is something I wouldn’t be looking for, I suggest making it somewhat easier to see (even though it is like right on top, but I wouldn’t check there :P) maybe make the other Categories part clickable too? image the categories thing on that bar

I’m pretty sure I saw that lay out for categories near when I found out about stonehearth which was about halfway through the kickstarter, so it can’t be too recent.
