Hello. I’m curious if any of the classes will ever get the ability to turn gold ore/ingots into gold coins? The blacksmith perhaps?
you can just sell them to the caravans
It’s possible. There hasn’t been too much discussion on creating currency oneself on the Discourse, but it’s possible there could be some sort of class that entails the minting of new money. Since we’ve only had traders for a few versions, we likely wouldn’t see something like this for a little while.
I’d like to see an artisan class that make small decorative items, perhaps a jeweler. I would think that gold plating might fit well there, but I could also see it being part of some sort of alchemist class.
I don’t know how coinage would really work as the economy within the village is collectivist – you don’t pay individual hearthlings, and they take from the stockpiles whatever they have a hankering for. What would the mechanic be, spend effort to mint coins, and then they’re worth more than the gold bar they were made from for purposes of external trade?
I believe @8BitCrab is working on a mod that would include this.
from what I’ve read a while back, eventually we’ll have multiple large cities, all filled with hearthlings. I would assume at that point we would no longer be working with individual hearthlings, but entire groups. we would not have 2-3 soldiers but 20 in each platoon, and at least 10 platoons in the major towns. something that could foster that transition would be the appointment of a “minter”.
at the beginning, you don’t even have houses, so it makes sense that no one asks for pay - there’s nothing there yet, they are starting a brand new town in a brand new place. everything is communal, and everyone knows everyone. at some point, however, it’ll be better to allow your cities to work automatically without you having to micromanage it. by appointing town officials, you could raise the level of autonomy of the town, one such town official being the minter, who will produce money that you personally don’t use for anything, but your hearthlings do use (although money that you collect as tax will be money you have access to). basically, the minter will create “private” money, which turns into “public” money upon taxes. it would be reasonable for crafters to start demanding pay for their work. your workers will build roads faster as you have more of them, but they won’t work for free.
while you could avoid that autonomy by simply not making town officials, it makes having anything larger than a village very inefficient, and it’ll eat up all your time micromanaging a small settlement. so it’s not like making your workers IN THAT TOWN demand pay is a bad thing for you.
of course, this is far, far, far in the future, and may not even be something the devs intend to do. if they do, it’d be better, and I would like it, but it would be hard work, that’s for sure.
indeed i am, and i actually plan on making a new class for making coins, rather then having the blacksmith do it.
