(Construction Mechanics) Fabricating multiple blocks as a last resort, as opposed to the norm

I’ve been playing Stonehearth since the very first release and have been watching it grow and playing the various releases. According to my Steam version I have over 700 hours in it. And one thing that I have always loved has been watching the Hearthlings construct my buildings one block at a time. There’s something satisfying about watching a building come together like that. I have encountered, in previous versions, being unable to place blocks past a certain point (for instance a roof that was one block below some dirt overhead). In such instances I feel that multiple block fabrication should happen, but only as a fail safe.

Maybe it’s just me. But I love them building block-by-block and it honestly bums me out that multi-block fabrication is the new norm. And that’s why I decided to post here, today.

hey there @FabricationFrank, welcome to the discourse :smile:

i’m with you on loving to relax and watch hearthlings build every block individually when playing the game, however, i’m pretty sure a lot of players prefer to have the new multi-block building over the old style.

so rather than totally replace/waste the new, perhaps the team could put in a toggle in the settings for those who want to watch every block be built individually. (default being the new style).

@yshan knew there was going to be mixed opinions about this feature, especially from long time players. While there isn’t currently a hybrid solution like @FabricationFrank suggests, you can make a simple change to return the game to single block building.

Simply add the following to your mods section of user_settings.json to change back to single block building.

"fabricate_num_blocks" : 1,
"teardown_num_blocks" : 1,

Your user_settings.json should end up looking something like this:

{
...
...blah, blah stuff...
...
	"mods" : {
		"stonehearth" : {
			"fabricate_num_blocks" : 1,
			"teardown_num_blocks" : 1,
			"enable_speed_three" : true,
			"default_storage_filter_none" : true,
...
...blah, blah more stuff...
...
}

awesome to know that Yang added that option :smile:

so, is it not in the in-game settings menu? if not, might i suggest it get added to the gameplay tab of that. though it’s not hard to find/edit the user_settings.json, it’s a whole lot nicer to be able to just tick a box in-game rather than having to edit a file. :slight_smile:

If I recall the stream correctly - Yang was hesitant to add anything else to the Gameplay tab until Nikki figures out what’s going to happen to it. There’s already a lot of stuff there, and she doesn’t want it to be overwhelming.

Thank you both for replying. Glad to know that the team was aware of the potential for a mixed response and that they put that into consideration with changes such as these. And also thank you to @jomaxro for the code, I’ve added it in for when I next play. My save from before the code addition will still work with it, right? Also just for the sake of asking, do you happen to know how they’ll proceed on this or whether they’re going to look into a method like the one in my initial post? (I understand the update is still very new (as is this post) but I was just wondering if that happened to be mentioned similar to the foresight regarding mixed reactions)

Yep! You can toggle that on and off as much as you’d like.

To the best of my understanding, they will be leaving the multi-block building as the default method. While it is less realistic than single block, they’ve stated that the amount of time it took in the past for buildings was too much, and this was a way of improving that. Yang might have more to share, we’ll have to see if she sees this on Monday.

Alright, here’s hoping, then. Thanks again for answering. :smile:
