First time posting here. Finally getting my humble bundle code and downloading the game… I’ve spent about 12hrs worth of game time exploring in Alpha 13 and have a few observations and comments to make. Aslo I’d just like to say how awesome it has been looking at all the stuff that other people have built in this game and all the excitement in the community. It is a really cool game!
Class Tools:
There are some issues with the way that class tools are currently accessed, mostly related to Rayya’s children but also potentially problematic for the introduction of other races. Having all the most basic class tools, other then the trapper’s knife and the carpenter’s saw crafted by the carpenter is really problematic. From what I understand there are only 3 ways to get food in the game when you start, Farming, Gathering, and Trapping. Rayya’s children can’t make a carpenter’s saw until they have a leveled up blacksmith, preventing them from accessing all sort of classes until much later in the game. Is this an intentional design to make them harder to play?
Floating Building and Such:
It is currently possible to build a small pillar using the block or free standing wall tool in the custom building option and then construct whatever you want floating in the air, you can then remove the impossible support the leave things floating in the sky. I realize there is some sort of support/gravity engine and I’m not complaining, I just thought it was an amusing thing to do. Similarly you can currently walk underwater and build things fully submerged, and you can plant crops underground… I need some more testing on that last one, I’m not sure if they ever grow.
Canceling Actions:
Right now it is not possible to cancel an action like an area that has been designated to be mined. I really hope this get implemented in the next release. Buildings can be put on pause or removed, so it’s not an issue there, but it ca cause some real problems with mining and gathering.
Why Build houses:
Ok so seriously, other then “it’s fun” what is the point of building houses? Mining generates resources instead of spending them, is faster, allows for contiguous expansion and modification of existing structures, creates a safer living space, and appears to have no downside in terms of citizen happiness or function… additionally if I’m right about the ability to grow crops underground, the surface world is pretty much only necessary for acquiring wood. I think this would be great for Dwarves once they are implemented, but I don’t think the other races should be happy or healthy living in caves.
