8/4/15 Meet the Animal Trainer

Lillith, the Animal Trainer slashes into combat with Leonard the Sheep ramming by her side!
Say hello to the Animal Trainer! The Animal trainer is a Spirit-Body class, so it uses Ki as it’s ability source.
Abilities
Pet Sheep: The Animal Trainer begins with a pet sheep, which functions as a sheep under the player’s control.
Traps: The Animal Trainer can create traps for 1 iron per trap. The trap is concealed, and when the first enemy to get within 1" of the trap, it becomes snared and takes 5 damage.
Agile: At level 2, your speed is increased by 2"
Pet Wolf: At level 3, the Animal Trainer manages to catch a Wolf. Unfortunatley, the wolf eats the sheep, and the sheep is lost. The wolf functions as the pet sheep ability, only using a wolf’s stats instead of a sheep’s. If you are not carrying anything other than a single weapon, you may ride the wolf.
Pet Mammoth: At level 5, the Animal Trainer achieves the ultimate hunt, and trains a Mammoth. Sadly, the Mammoth sits on the pet wolf, and the wolf is lost. The Mammoth functions as the pet sheep ability, only using a Mammoth’s stats instead of a sheep’s. You may ride the Mammoth, no matter how many items you are carrying.
More abilities are coming soon, so watch out!
8/4/15 Tabletop, or Tabletop? The Answer: Tabletop!
Typically, RPG’s are tabletop RPG’s, using a square or hex tile system. I am pleased to announce that SHL will be an open movement tabletop game! In addition, ranges will function like this: Close Range (AKA Close Combat) is any enemy within 6". Medium Range (Magic Range) is any enemy within 12". Meanwhile, Long Range (Bow Range) is any enemy within 24".
8/4/15 Meet the Shield Bearer

Olvin, the Shield Bearer charges through the battlefield!
Say hello to the first class, the Shield Bearer! The Shield Bearer is a Combat-Combat class. Instead of mana, the shield bearer uses rage, which is collected by dealing damage or being dealt damage.
Abilities
Protect: You gain 2 Shield points (Note: A shield point absorbs all damage from a single attack and then is expended)
Powerful Swing: Deal 20 damage to all enemies in close combat with the Shield Bearer
8/3/15 Stonehearth: Legends Announced!
I plan on releasing an early alpha test packet in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

If you’re going to go full-authentic, you’re going to need to delve into some dark corners of the Stonehearth world of memes up to this point… Be ready to add goggles, pillows, burly hands, and even the dreaded fish pike.

I’d also add Map Games to that list, but I have too much respect for @Geoffers747. (Plus, that’s more of a running Discourse infamy than the game itself…)

In all seriousness, though…

Sounds interesting! I’m curious to see how it might play out–will it involve the characters coming to life on the table once played/activated (or some similar visual style)?

ahem weresheep ahem

I want this to be authentic to the game itself, not the fanbase. However, I would like to point out that I will be accepting mod submissions to be placed in the game.

Weresheep were in the game itself once. As were birdbath toilets and the dreaded bed-thieving goblins. All of thise “bugs” have since been removed, but I still miss the first and last ones.

just wondering @Shasfowd did you get permission from TR for this? i dont think they’ll have any problems, but perhaps you should check.

as well as goblins that were able to burn stone using the dark arts.

also, sorry for the “slight” derailment @Shasfowd

I can’t believe you forgot Wombats. There have /got/ to be Wombats…

I guess the real question is, is this supposed to be something like a D&D rpg in the sense of character’s leveling and adventuring, or perhaps something involving unit allocation, city construction, etc.

The shield-bearer is actually a planned class! Did you know this? You can check in stonehearth’s class files, and there you will see many incomplete class files, such as the shield bearer, Armor smith, Architect, and more! Also, here’s two things you must know before you begin to plan the campaign and stuff.

  • Remember, magic is rare. Not only that but it’s powerful, and dangerous. Backfiring spells and scars left on your environment are very liable things to happen!
  • The orcs are NOT gross, ugly, brutes. The orcs are a bad-arse group of conquerors comparable to the Huns and the Romans. So you could just as readily make Half-orcs playable as you could pure orcs. Not to mention they’re orange. And already have models.
  • Different races means different classes. In the actual land of stonehearth, this is for the sake of all races having a different play style. However, I suppose you could exploit this and make some awesome race-exclusive classes!
  • And, last but not least, there is no cows. Only yaks. There is no pigs. Only boars.

Also, here’s a tip. Perhaps you could utilize some non-combat classes for this game? For example, even though he’s not a combat class, we could play the trapper, the hunter, and so on.

EDIT: This is just a quick question, are shield points able to protect from magic attacks?

I believe that they’re not yaks, but mammoths. And I’ve spent my share in the caverns of the hearthstone files  . I am aware of the shield bearer being a class, and I plan on making classes only if they are in the game. All races will be able to play all classes

Oh @Atralane

It appears the automatic and irreversible life time ban that we put in place for anyone that uses either of those words has taken affect. Seeing as you used both, the only reasonable penalty is death. I’ll make the arrangements, we’ll collect you in the morning.

I’ll get that sack of potatoes, empty it, and cut eye-holes in it for the executioner.

Well, that explains why I only see a handful of the old guard hanging around here

But on topic, I notice that aiming for something along the lines of a Warhammer 40K system in terms of movement and combat, @Shasfowd. The big issue that I see with that is, unlike D&D and other tabletop RPGs, this kind of battle system requires a physical, topographical map, such that units can move and interact with it (compared to D&D and its greater reliance on the “theater of the mind” style combat)

Quick, get the editors! We’ve gotta get rid of that word before it gets noticed!

That’s fine, just make sure the fish pike dies along with me.

Not with me with me, though. Keep that awful thing as far away from me as possible. The obsession over getting it in the game and the resulting incessant nautical puns still haunts me.

(And now, posting related-to-topic content as to not derail the thread further …)

I’m a bit confused as to how the game will work, exactly. Is there a board game already in existence that’s similar to how Legends will work?

I was actually thinking about this myself, recently. Since it’s meant to be a tabletop game, which often includes cards, what if the map was made up of a grid of cards with different terrains/obstacles/etc. on them? This would also allow the incorporation of building, farming, and other actions by using these tiles (e.g. farming only works on cards/tiles with an “arable” trait, or perhaps the presence of a mountain causes a structure you want to build to cost more money.).

Since the game operates on square sectors, it might be fitting for the game world to be organized in a similar way.

The only issue I see with this is:

Which would then imply something topographical, purely for the reason that it’s very hard to do a system like this without physical models of the terrain and buildings on which to place units, and to determine cover etc. Additionally, a 12" range is very long, even for medium range, and a 6" range is incredibly large for close combat; you’d need an entire warehouse floor to cover a decent-sized Stonehearth map, and a standard table would hold just enough for a decent sized settlement; not much space for any real adventuring to occur…

On the other hand, something more along the lines of Krosmaster Arena (http://www.krosmaster.com/en) springs to mind, in terms of maps, movement, and combat (especially the way you have your skills lined up).

That would be like creating all of the Forgotten Realms for a D&D campaign. The Gamemaster makes multiple maps. One could be a settlement, while another could be a goblin camp. And if the area is large enough (like a large settlement), there would be multiple maps for that.

The problem that I’m seeing here is that a system of movement like you are suggesting requires a 3D construction, for movement, cover considerations, etc. The system you seem to be more hinting at sounds to me like a 4E grid-based system - its especially cleaner in regards to movement, since you don’t need measuring tapes on hand, and making maps on a grid is much simpler. That, and it has the added touch of fitting well in the Stonehearth aesthetic.

so aparently I’ll be making a grid based system.
